missed a flight, now a mess

missed a flight, now a mess

I was supposed to fly from VCE-IST-BKK (on Turkish)-SIN (on Thai) in Business, booked as award ticket from United. At Singapore I should have only 6 hours for my things and then I supposed to fly back to US on SQ SIN-IAH in First. The thing is that my first flight (VCE-IST) was delayed by 3 hours due to snow at Venice and as a result I missed my connecting flight to BKK-SIN. Of course, Turkish staff was on their “best” side of customer service – no communications, nobody met the flight and of course, nobody notified that customers may miss connection (by just 5 minutes, literally). Anyway, Turkish staff couldn’t find any flights to SIN that would bring me there before my SQ flight leaves (TK flies to SIN once per day, at night). So, I had no choice by calling SQ and cancel my first class ticket (btw, it was the last flight on SQ on that route that had a first class).

I called United and tried to change my ticket from going to SIN to USA. Agent tried, but everything was so messed up by Turkish, so she couldn’t do anything and Turkish was in denial or didn’t have any abilities to make things right. So, I had to abandon my ticket and book a new award ticket from IST (where I was stuck) back to USA.

Now, the question is how can I get my miles back for my unused ticket IST-BKK-SIN? I don’t like the option that I flew one leg only (VCE-IST) and paid 85K miles for that. When I asked agent on the phone about that, he wasn’t sure what to do and recommended to write United on their feedback line. Which I think it wouldn’t help at all.

Since most of you are experienced flyers, what would you recommend? What should I do?

    Thanks!

hi @Sergey, I’ve actually written to UA after I called them to switch my Swiss J seats to LH F seats. I paid the change fees and found out that they had put us in old LH angled J on their 747. Was so mad. I did write in to them through their website and they did refund two change fees for my wife and I. I would start with writing them to see how you do.
