Hi Everyone, I had a question and can really use some help.

The goal – 2 business class round trip tickets to Milan 8/11 – 8/28 for me and the gf.

AA – Gold – 50k miles (she is also gold and has maybe 15k miles)
United – 490
Alaska – 13,322
CHASE Sapphire Rsr – 120k

So given this info I am trying to figure out what is the best thing for me to do. Should I transfer my chase points to an airline or use them to purchase tickets through the portal and use miles to upgrade? Really I would like to fly American so I can stay Gold for the year and I can potentially buy an economy flight and use my 50k to upgrade to business and use the chase points and the book another economy and use her miles + the remaining chase points to transfer to miles and book a second flight…..hope that made some sense. I am also told that I can use my chase points for a round trip biz class ticket so I would only be on the hook for a second ticket. Or maybe book through british airways since they are part of AA and I can use miles and get benefits for status that way I can use chase and AA miles to my benefit. In any case as you can probably tell by now I am a rookie at this and any help I can get would be greatly appreciated!!! HELP!

Award flights dont earn any kind of miles or elite status credits at all, and paid upgrades (cash, or miles and cash) still only earn based on the original ticket class.

Before buying an BA or AA economy ticket, I’d call to make sure there is confirmable upgrade space first. Otherwise, you may be stuck in economy.

Oneway tickets between US and Europe are generally expensive so splitting up might not be the best idea. AA, AS and LifeMiles are all selling miles with a bonus – maybe you can take advantage of that? You can use UA miles transferred from Chase for flights in one direction and then buy miles to get award flights for the other direction.

I fly AA often to Italy and upgrades have been nearly impossible to get in the past year on TATL flights. i haven’t seen any sAAver award space in J on AA metal, only on BA flights which carry a hefty tax. You might have the best chance on UA like David W recommends. Good luck.

Thanks! I am going to look into all my options. I saw flights on Turkish were cheap, maybe if I find space I can book an economy ticket with turkish and transfer my chase points to turkish miles and upgrade that way. I will have to look into conversions and availability like you said. So much to look into!

I have gone the last 3 years and last year was the first time that I got the round trip upgrade and I didnt get the upgrade for the return flight until I was at the airport. Its a little trickier this year since my gf will be traveling with me, I need 2 award seats….seems like a stretch but im an optimist.

Good luck @saba. Just a word of caution: Chase UR points do not transfer to Turkish airlines. You can use them to book travel through UR partners like United and Singapore who also partner with Turkish through star alliance. To upgrade a cash ticket booked on TK you will need Turkish miles.
