LAX to LIH Award Options – AA

LAX to LIH Award Options – AA

  1. Anonymous Guest

    Hi All,

I’m wondering how best to pay for an American Airlines flight from LAX to LIH (Kauai) in late August. I’m new to points transfers so I wanted to make sure I’m going with the best choice. Here are my options (listed as per person costs, but will be paying for 2 people incl. me):

    1) Pay $205 for each ticket in Main Cabin ($410 total) – receive free checked bags (two total, so I would save $60) through Platinum AA status

    2) Redeem 12K AA award miles + $5.60 for each Main Cabin ticket (24K total), but my balance on AA is currently 5,000 miles so I would need to transfer 60K Marriott points (3:1 transfer ratio) to cover – receive free checked bags (two total, so I would save $60) through Platinum AA status

    3) Redeem 13K Avios for each Main Cabin ticket (26K total), transferring AmEx rewards points to cover and pay additional $60 for checked bags as AA elite status does not apply to Avios award flights.

    Thanks for your help!
    Jeff

I’d probably do option 1 or option 3. To me, $400 out of pocket to get to Hawaii is a pretty solid deal. As a Platinum AA member – you’d also have the option to use 500 mile upgrades, no?

Are you sure you won’t get your benefits with option 3 if you switch your FF number on file to your AA number?
