Is it possible to ask Alaska to open up award space on a short domestic leg to complete an award?

Is it possible to ask Alaska to open up award space on a short domestic leg to complete an award?

I’m looking to book an award CGK-HKG-LAX-SFO in F with the first two legs on CX and the last on AS (no CX award space HKG-SFO on the day I want), but even though every F seat on the AS flight is for sale, there are no award seats available. I tried asking one AS agent if it was possible to put in a request to open a seat to complete the itinerary, but she said that no such process exists. Is this reality or is this a HUCA situation?

I’m pretty sure the agent is right. I’ve inky heard that this works on American though even that is rare and I haven’t tried it myself.

Id just fly economy in the route. It’s quite short.

I believe the agent is correct however, if space does open up later, they should be able to book it for you. I’ve had this scenario work out on AA in the past – booked a leg in Economy and later when space opened, I phoned and was “upgraded.”

Agent was correct, Alaska doesn’t have a process to request additional award inventory, but you can always upgrade later for no additional miles (though will likely pay a change fee).

Thanks all! After putting me on hold for a while the agent (who seemed generally very friendly and helpful) came back and said while it wasn’t possible to request additional inventory in the fare bucket, it was possible to “waitlist” the F award so that if space did open up in the right bucket I’d automatically be upgraded at no cost. She said she hadn’t known this was possible before, and it wasn’t something I’d heard of either on AS so I thought it was worth sharing.
