If I have an award ticket but need to change dates do I need to find flights with award space?
I have an award ticket from BKK-DAY confirmed for early July on three segments (TG 634 BKK-TPE, BR 56 TPE-ORD, and UA 3655 ORD-DAY). While I am not sure if I need to yet, if I end up having to push my date of travel back would I need to find another date with available award seats or since my ticket is already confirmed at this point can I be rebooked on to the same flights on any day even if there is no space available in the “I” fare class? In other words, if I wanted to instead fly in early August but EVA Air has not released an award seat on the Taipei-Chicago flight (that flight in particular is pretty hard to find space on) on my date of choice would I need to either find a different routing or find a different day where there is award space; or could I be booked on to that flight since I had a confirmed ticket for that specific flight, just on a different day?
I booked the ticket through LifeMiles if that makes any difference and for what it’s worth, I have already had my schedule altered once by the airline (originally booked on TG 632 BKK-TPE but that flight was canceled) which I believe should give me some more freedoms in regards to flexibility and being able to request changes
I would think there would need to be award space available since this is an award ticket. Changes *should* be fairly easy, provided there is award space.
Typically if you want to change your dates on your own terms, you’d have to find space in the same fare class. If the change is the fault of the airline, that’s where there is typically much more flexibility to change with little to no penalty. It seems like you had a schedule change already, but it sounds like you already confirmed your new itinerary? Usually, accepting the new flight is something you can only do once – the airline would have to schedule change again in order to be able to change with no penalty.
With all that said… coronavirus is throwing policies out the window. I would just call and ask, be prepared to maybe hang up and try a different agent if you don’t have the ideal outcome.
Airlines do have flexibility if they change schedules but I find that is usually the case when you are flying the airline you use for booking (in this case that would be Avianca). However, one airline does not normally have the ability to force open award space on another carrier. Plus I would consider that this is Lifemiles, not the most responsive at the best of times and now on the verge of bankruptcy. I would not expect them to be able to make any changes that are out of the ordinary and would have a backup plan in mind if they go out of business before your flights.
