Iberia Plus or Qatar Privilege Club ?

Iberia Plus or Qatar Privilege Club ?

  1. Christian Cambreleng New Member

    Hi,

I bought a round trip MAD-DOH-KUL with Qatar in Business Class (I). Flying in July 2016.

I have a Iberia Plus loyalty card with already 60.000 Avios, should I use this one to collect the miles for the mentioned , or would it be better to obtain the miles in Qatar´s own Privilege Club ?

My intention is to use the miles in a future upgrade from economy to business flying with Qatar. As far I understand, with Iberia you need to upgrade all the round-trip, but with Qatar you can upgrade just a segment of your trip. So with Iberia I need to have all the needed Avios to upgrade and with Qatar if I don’t have all the Qmiles, at least I could upgrade one or two segment of a multiple stop trip.

Thanks in advance for your help

    Welcome.

I don’t think you can use Iberia Avios to upgrade an QR Y ticket to J, only to book J awards

    From IB website

Turn your flight into a soaring experience

“You can use your Avios to change your economy booking (fares Y, B or H) into Business Class.

Just ask at your Iberia Plus Service Centre or any Iberia Sales Office.

*Option valid for tickets issued on Iberia Group* direct flights (Iberia and Iberia Regional/Air Nostrum), except flights IB4XXX, IB5XXX and IB7XXX”

Most Oneworld airlines do not allow class upgrade on partners, or just allow it on some partners.

Oneworld programs do not allow you to upgrade tickets on a partner airline’s flight, unlike Star Alliance programs.

For the QR program, it may be worth noting that for Gold (sapphire) and Platinum (emerald) members, they also offer Qcredits, which are separate from the normal redeemable miles (Qmiles) or ‘tier points’ (Qpoints) that you get. Qcredits can be used for upgrades as well as other goodies (you can upgrade an award ticket, but not redeem an award ticket with Qcredits), saving you your Qmiles for the actual award ticket redemption. Quite handy. Also, elite status is relatively easy to achieve with QR.

Unfortunately, the earn/burn ratio on QR’s program is really among the worst out there, in my opinion. Only worth it if you’re gonna fly enough with them to actually be able to use those Qcredits to ‘offset’ the cost of the award tickets. Otherwise, you might be better off crediting to other programs and redeeming a business class award on QR instead.

That is not entirely true, as I wrote above

BA Avios can be used for upgrade on BA, IB and AA.

AA miles can be used for upgrade on AA, IB and BA.

This is the programs just from what I can remember off the top of my head there might be more, sadly none of this will help the original poster with his QR upgrade.
