Hello, newbie here! Hoping to get some sound advice for a last minute trip to Japan using my AMEX Membership Reward Points I’ve been saving. I greatly appreciate any advice given. Hoping to snag two business class seats from California to Tokyo on ANA, either free or by upgrades. Worst case scenario would be to use the points for Premium Economy or completely free on Economy, as rates are high during peak season. Here are my stats:

-December 12-19
-Depart from LAX or SFO (or even San Jose if on the new Star Wars planes;)
-AMEX balance: ~140,000
-Forefeited points I can reinstate: ~ 11000 with $135 fee
-Expired UAL miles: ~19000; unsure of I can reinstate since they expired in 2013(?)
-current pricing: ~$1600 r/t pp from LAX on economy, ~$4800 on business.

What is the best way to utilize my points? Would it be better to pay for a more expensive economy fare and upgrade? Or should I consider a different airline? I’ve never redeemed points before so this is all new to me. Thanks!!!
