how to get to Europe using MR points?

how to get to Europe using MR points?

  1. markreinoso New Member

I’ve been collecting points for a while, and use them domestically a lot, mainly through AVIOS. I have never used points before to get to Europe though…other than 2 years ago when I used 238k AMEX miles to discount $2380 off my 6k travel bill through the amex travel portal…I still cringe every time I think about it.

I am wondering whats my best transfer option to get 5 economy tickets from PHX to anywhere in europe? I have 270k miles, and I know Avios doesn’t work because of the fees.

I’m sorry for the lame question, everyone is talking about first and business class, and Im over here in the cheap seats….

Are you starting from scratch or do you have another pile of Membership Rewards points to use?

And don’t worry about the “cheap seats”. Lots of us still fly that way and if you need 5 tickets that’s almost always going to be the only way you’ll be able to fly together.

    Where in Europe?
If you can get to DUB and then to else where with Intra Europe flights, then PHX-BOS-DUB could be a good option. From PHX-BOS you can use AA(US) or Alaska Airlines. From BOS-DUB Aer Lingus is the best option to avoid surcharges.

I have 265k Amex MR points, 88k Avios, 68k SPG and 69k Thank you points.

I have tried ANA like I have seen on some threads, but there is no availability, and I am not sure how to do a connection. I want to go from PHX to TLS in June 2016

I really want to go from PHX to TLS round trip in JUNE.

Thats a really good idea to get to DUB. Do you have to to collect the bags at each stop, since its a different ticket? I think I know about points, and then I read these threads and I am a little lost.

Aer Lingus also has a DUB-TLS flight so you could book it as PHX-BOS (AA) and BOS-DUB, DUB-TLS on EI. Of course if you’re paying with Avios you’re charged for each segment, so you can play with the routing to see what’s best.

    PHX-BOS-DUB-TLS = 12500 + 12500 + 7500 = 32,500 each way
    PHX-ORD-DUB-TLS = 10000 + 20000 + 7500 = 37,500 each way

You can do all this on one ticket though you may have to get the bags in DUB to clear customs. But you’ll have to call BA to make the reservations.

If you are planning on using the MRs to transfer to Avios do it ASAP. Because MR-Avios transfer ratio is going down by 20% starting from tomorrow.
    Today = 1:1
    Tomorrow+ = 5:4

If you are planning to visit Europe next summer, and have not yet picked up the tickets take a look on this cash+avios deal that BA is running until the 19.
