Good Dilemma to Have

Good Dilemma to Have

I’m going to be going on an overseas business trip next month. The schedule is not set yet but I know I’ll go to Italy for the first part of the week and then to Germany though the cities are not even confirmed yet.

As a United silver I’d rather take Star Alliance flights but as I’ve browsed airfare (guessing at cities) through our work portal, it seems like the Sky Team flights are going to be much cheaper, maybe due to our contracts with them, who knows.

These are full fare, fully-refundable business class flights so I earn a lot of redeemable miles. Sadly I don’t get to pay for them with my own credit card but last year one trip to London earned me that United status.

I have a friend who wants to go to NZ & AUS for her birthday next year so I’m thinking that maybe SkyTeam miles aren’t all bad. My question is: if we do fly SkyTeam should I credit the miles to Delta or Virgin Atlantic? I only have 12K Delta but can supplement with MRs/SPG and I can supplement VS miles with URs/SPG. I think the VS award chart is better but I don’t want to orphan miles there.

And does VS require round-trip flights? For the trip Down Under next year I’d prefer not to have to fly to AUS on the way to NZ but we will be returning from AUS to the US.

I do have plenty of AA and UA miles as well. My dream would be to find seats on the flights between Houston & AKL/SYD but am prepared for that not to happen.

Appreciate the knowledge of the brain trust here!

I think I’d lean toward DL, if there were available seats on China Airlines between SYD/BNE/AKL and Taipei.
