Etihad first class
Would it be better to book a business class award with the hope of upgrading to first apartments on the A380 out of JFK or book a guaranteed first suites award on the B787 out of IAD? Is there a huge difference between A380 and B787 First Class?
The difference is massive between the A380 and the 787. AA does not charge a change fee as long as you keep the origin and destination the same/upgrading your award so I would book the award you would be okay flying and then just change if you see availability.
As Gaurav said very large difference. EY787 F is a good and solid F product, but not even close to the EY A380.

Hope this helps Cal.
Agree with the above. Just make sure you are booked on the A380 out of JFK and not the Jet Airways aircraft.
