Emirates & Alaska/American on a single JAL partner award ticket?
I think the answer is a big fat “no”, but just wanted to be sure. If I redeem JMB miles for travel on Emirates from HKG-DXB-LAX, can I also add American or Alaska LAX-SEA on the same award?
As bad luck would have it, HKG-DXB-LAX is just 27 miles over 12K miles, so it’ll cost 135K JMB miles instead of 115K for F awards. I assume there’s no way around that, right? At least if I could add in LAX-SEA for the same 135K miles, it would soften the blow of the bad luck.
Thanks,
Todd
@SeattleTodd, I haven’t heard of any restrictions for JAL routing re: partners so my assumption would be that you should be able to mix them… However only AA is a JAL partner, not AS. Maybe @Tiffany will have more insight.

Thanks @Gaurav. I knew that about AS! Don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that! But I am actually concerned about the ability to book EK and AA on a single JMB partner award. I know you can mix OneWorld, but I thought for a “partner” like Emirates you can’t mix airlines. Can anyone confirm? And any chance of sweet talking JAL around being 27 miles over assuming I can’t add the AA segment from LAX to SEA.
Thanks!
You know, it’s been awhile since I’ve booked a JAL award, but I think you can mix partners, or you could last time I tried. I think.
Honestly, JAL agents are generally pretty competent, so I might just call over and have them price an itinerary for you and see what they say. I wouldn’t plan on being able to talk them into a lower mileage rate though.

Hey @Tiffany and @Gaurav: I called JAL and, as feared, you can’t mix a non-One-World airline with any others on an award. So, since Emirates isn’t in OneWorld, an Emirates award with JAL miles is limited to travel on Emirates only. Arrrrggggh! 🙁
Todd, could you mix JAL & Emirates or would it have to be Emirates only? May not be relevant to your situation but am curious about the answer.

Sadly, any non-OneWorld partner requires its own award, even for JAL.
You could book an award using BA Avios for LAX-SEA. 7500 avios one way, on either AS or AA metal

Absolutely. But I’d probably just purchase them for $94 each before blowing Avios on them. Was just hoping to soften the blow of being 27 miles over the 12K mile limit — was hoping to at least be able to get from LAX to SEA for the extra 20K miles (135K miles vs 115K miles) the award will cost.

Is Dubai your final destination? Maybe you can add some fun short stops in other cities in the region to make up some of the mileage? Both Muscat and Doha can be seen in a day, if needed.
If you dont want to make up the mileage as Tiffany suggests, maybe you can terminate in SFO? It’s just under 12K miles. I imagine you can find a cheap connecting flight from there to SEA. DFW and IAH are also options just under 12K…

Yeah, would have preferred SFO since it’s closer to Seattle and I hate LAX. But for whatever reason, there is virtually no EK F availability DXB-SFO, but absolutely tons of it DXB-LAX. Just bad luck on my account all round.

Thanks, Tiffany — I would love to, but we don’t have the time to extend the trip anymore. We’re on a 2-week cruise of SE Asia (Singapore to Hong Kong) and starting the trip with a few highlights in the area not on the cruise, before we get on the cruise. I’ll be a dead man if I even suggest extending the trip even more — which I’m already doing by taking EK home instead of KE (or CX if we could get two seats). 🙂
