convert roundtrip award ticket to one-way

convert roundtrip award ticket to one-way

I have a trip coming up that I will probably book as a roundtrip award ticket on United. However, I’d like the have the option of cancelling half of the roundtrip ticket to turn it into an one way ticket (and get the proportionate amount of miles refunded). Is this possible?

(I think the reverse is possible, to go from one-way to roundtrip, right?)

Also, if this is possible, what fees would apply? Would this count as a change fee or cancellation fee?

I know that another option is to book two one way tickets in this case. But the trip is coming up soon and i’d like to avoid an extra late booking fee if possible.
