Buying AAdvantage miles

Buying AAdvantage miles

  1. Sunil New Member

    Hi,

I have opened a new AAdvantage account to book an award ticket, however I don’t have any miles in it. I was planning to buy the 45000 miles needed for my ticket, however I have just seen that accounts need to be open for 30 days before miles can be bought.

Is there anyway to get the miles without waiting? I want to book my flights soon and don’t have a month to wait. Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who has an account, otherwise I’d have just asked given them the money for the miles instead.

Try casting your net a little wider? Maybe a friend of a friend on facebook might have one and they can connect you? It’s a sizeable purchase and I think you’d need to have some trust for someone to make that purchase for you.

@Sunil Also remember, buying miles from another member is usually against the rules of FF programs so make sure that you frame your request correctly. The person buying the miles will have to book the ticket in your name. Also, make sure you have space on your travel dates and a backup plan as well. Award space can change quickly and there are no refunds on miles purchases.

Oh I see, thanks for the info @Gaurav. Is it possible to book tickets for someone from another account? I don’t know how AAdvantage works exactly

@Sunil – yes, with most (but not all) programs you can use your miles to book a ticket for someone else. Some programs require that the recipient of the ticket be a relative, but none of the US-based programs require this (that I’m aware of).

So I rang American and they told me that I can buy miles from tomorrow onwards?? But their website says i have to wait 30 days.

    I’m very confused

@Sunil, when did you open your account? What the agent told you doesn’t sound right but they’ve been known to be wrong before. On the plus side, you’ll be able to confirm this in less tha 24 hours :).

@Gaurav I got it yesterday – I even told the people on the phone that too. Hopefully it will work tomorrow though I’m not optimistic about it

@Sunil–out of curiosity, are you going to use these on BA to fly to India?

  10. Sunil New Member

Nope- they have a good sale on right now anyway so I’d use cash and buy a ticket instead
