ATL–> BKK With Miles

ATL–> BKK With Miles

I am going to Thailand on my Honeymoon and am looking to get to Bangkok on points/miles in a lay-flat business class or first. Being an Atlanta based traveler, I value my status with Delta. If there is a way to get from ATL to BKK while pulling in the 20k MQMS, that would be IDEAL! Realizing this is likely not an option, I am trying to somehow take advantage of Skymiles and Ultimate Rewards somehow(so we dont drain both accounts), due to the fact that Korean and Delta code share. Award availability seems to be an issue with Korean Air, so I am open to the idea of flying to SEA or LAX to get on a flight to BKK if necessary.

My Inventory:
Chase Ultimate Rewards: 190k
Delta Skymiles: 140k

Fiance Inventory:
Chase Ultimate Rewards: 110k
Delta Skymiles: 80k

I feel like we have the points inventory to do it, I am just having a hard time with figuring the best way…

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome.

If I understand your post correct your have 2 questions?

1: If there are any paid flights ATL-BKK that will earn you 20K MQM aka Medallion Qualification Miles?

2: If you have enough miles for award tickets for 2 persons?

If you are asking if you can upgrade a paid ticket with miles and still earn 20K MQMs see this:

But I don’t think there are any flights flying west with Delta that is long enough for you to earn 20K MQMs.

Question nr. 1:

By flying on a Group 1 partner carrier with full miles earnings.
https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/earn-miles/earn-miles-with-partners/airlines.html

Example flying with Air France.

ATL-CDG-BKK return is 22028 miles:
http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=atl-cdg-bkk-cdg-bkk

All fares above V booking class earns at least 100% of miles flown.
https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/earn-miles/earn-miles-with-partners/airlines/air-france.html

Don’t forget the check prices for premium economy as they can often not that more expensive than flying in economy, and would earn 150% of miles flown. So 33034MQMs and 4405 or 5507MQDs depending on booking class.

If you can find availability on China Airlines JFK/LAX/SFO-TPE-BKK, Delta charges 80k for business class per person, one way. You and your finance each have enough miles for this. You may have to call Delta to put the award together since it doesnt seem to show up online as one ticket. China Eastern via Shanghai is another option for the same 80k Delta miles as well.

For the return, you can transfer Chase UR points to Korean Air and book BKK-ICN-ATL for 75k per person in business class (or 95k for first). Note that these prices are for off-peak season travel and peak season dates require more miles. Peak/off-peak are based on the direction of travel so look into switching the itinerary around if you run into peak season pricing.

Lastly – award tickets wouldnt earn any MQMs at all.

The only way to earn MQM for mileage tickets from DL would be to use their pay with points option available to DL AmEx credit card holders. You would redeem miles for 1c each but the tickets would earn MQM and redeemable miles like regular tickets.
