AS-CX 72 Hour Rules
Hi guys,
Earlier in 2018 there was an issue where Alaska placed a 72hour restriction on all Cathay awards. The issue was quickly turned back that they would only place the restriction to intra-Asia awards.
I was trying to book an award from HKG to SYD for tomorrow but the agent told me that HKG to Australia and New Zealand were also included. Has anyone heard of any announcement? Or was this another Alaska’s sneaky plans to further restrict awards?
Thanks in advance!

I guess it depends on your definition of “intra-Asia” (and “sneaky”).
Alaska’s tweet said it was removing the restrictions on NA to Asia awards, but keeping it for intra-Asia. See: https://onemileatatime.com/alaska-72-hour-restriction-partner-awards/
While SYD may or may not be “Asia” – I’ve heard “Australasia’ used before – it certainly isn’t North America. So either Alaska views SYD as Asia, or if it doesn’t, it did not say either anything either way – only Asia and North America were specifically discussed. As for sneaky, I’d argue they have legitimate concerns re: fraud.
