We can now add yet another airline to the list of those rolling out free Starlink Wi-Fi for passengers…
In this post:
Scandinavian Airlines will offer free Starlink Wi-Fi
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has signed an agreement with SpaceX, to introduce Starlink Wi-Fi throughout its fleet. Best of all, SAS plans to offer Starlink Wi-Fi for free for all members of its EuroBonus loyalty program (which is free to sign-up for), and members can connect with multiple devices.
Starlink is known for its high-speed, low-latency broadband internet, and the service will be offered gate to gate. Starlink Wi-Fi will allow for live streaming, productivity similar to on the ground (with high upload and download speeds), gaming, e-commerce, and more.
Starlink is becoming increasingly popular with airlines. So far we’ve seen carriers like airBaltic, Air France, Air New Zealand, Hawaiian Airlines, Qatar Airways, United, and WestJet, all announce plans to install the service.
What’s also great about Starlink is that the installation process is pretty quick, once aircraft are certified to have it installed.
Here’s how SAS’ Chief Commercial Officer Paul Verhagen describes this:
“By introducing this new technology, we’re connecting our passengers to the world like never before. We’re putting an end to frustrating interruptions and ushering in a new era of connectivity. Whether flying over the Atlantic or the North Sea, our passengers can now count on a connection that is as stable and seamless as it is fast. This is about giving our customers the best and ensuring SAS remains synonymous with excellence.”
“This is a game-changer for our travelers. Gate-to-gate connectivity isn’t just an improvement — it’s a breakthrough in convenience and reliability. It gives our customers the freedom to work seamlessly, stay connected, and enjoy uninterrupted entertainment throughout their flight.”
Scandinavian Airlines’ Starlink Wi-Fi rollout plan
So, when should we expect Starlink to be introduced on SAS? So far, all we know is that the phased installation will start in late 2025, and it’ll eventually be available throughout the fleet, including narrow body and wide body aircraft.
So it’s anyone’s guess when the project will be completed. While the installation process for Starlink is faster than with other inflight Wi-Fi providers, it’s still quite an undertaking, given the size of the fleet. I’d expect this will take well over a year, best case scenario, and most likely a couple of years. So I wouldn’t expect Starlink to be available on all SAS aircraft before some point in 2027, give or take.
Bottom line
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) will introduce free Starlink Wi-Fi for EuroBonus members. This will progressively be rolled out as of late 2025, though we don’t yet know when the project will be completed. It’s awesome to see that free high speed Wi-Fi is increasingly becoming an industry standard, and look forward to using this service.
What do you make of SAS introducing free Starlink Wi-Fi?
SAS is truely getting worse and worse every day, just like the intellectuals called ORD and E39 have suggested.
They sure do
Slightly related: anyone know how many people "won" the Million Mile SAS Challenge? HFP reckons more than 700.....
I was at the same event the person writing on HfP was at. The SAS CMO said in the range of 600-700 people.
When will Lufthansa Group finally join? It’s absolutely ridiculous that they have no WiFi in 2025
Presumably they’ll develop their own custom satellite wi-fi system, announce it, wait 5 years to install it on thror first plane, and the. Realise it’s not certified.
The LH approach
Lufthansa has WiFi on a lot of planes
@E39
Lufthansa does not have Wi-Fi on a bunch of aircraft, namely the E190, A320neo, A321neo and CRJ fleet.
SWISS does not have wifi on their entire short haul fleet.
Eurowings does not have Wi-Fi on the A320neo, A321neo and a few A320s.
I fly around 120 sectors per year. About 90% do not have WiFi available.
Comparing this to SAS; whom already have wifi available on their A320neo fleet, its just a complete shit show.
