Sapphire Reserve Business Gets Bigger Hotel Credit, Bonus Category Cap

Sapphire Reserve Business Gets Bigger Hotel Credit, Bonus Category Cap

The Sapphire Reserve for Business℠ (learn more) is Chase’s premium business credit card. Chase has just unveiled two changes coming to the card, with one being positive, and the other being negative (though impacting very few people). Let’s get right into it…

Sapphire Reserve Business gets bigger The Edit credit

Currently the Chase Reserve Business offers up to $500 per calendar year in credits with The Edit by Chase Travel, which is Chase’s portal with a large selection of luxury hotels. Currently this comes in the form of a $250 credit that can be used twice per year, with the requirement that each stay be a minimum of two nights.

Starting January 1, 2027, the annual statement credit for The Edit by Chase Travel will double from $500 to $1,000, structured as a minimum of four statement credits. So the rules are staying the same, but instead of getting up to two credits, cardmembers will get up to four credits.

As a reminder, The Edit by Chase Travel bookings come with extra benefits with each stay, including a $100 property credit, daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade (if available), and more.

For those who can use the credit, this is of course a great development. I guess Chase determined that this benefit wasn’t costly at all. Keep in mind Chase gets a commission on hotel bookings, and the margins here depend entirely on how expensive the stay is.

If you can find a hotel that costs $250 per night and book a two night stay and then get the credit, Chase isn’t making money on that. Meanwhile if you book a $2,000 per night stay because you get a $250 credit, then that’s immediately profitable for Chase.

Sapphire Reserve Business gets cap on 3x points

As one of its bonus categories, the Sapphire Reserve Business offers 3x points on social media & search engine advertising. Up until now, that bonus category has been uncapped.

However, effective November 15, 2026, that bonus category will be capped at the first $1 million of spending per account anniversary year. After that, cardmembers will earn 1x points. The account anniversary year is defined as the period between November 15, 2026, and a cardmember’s next monthly statement with an annual fee, and then every 12-month period after that.

I would imagine this doesn’t impact 99.9%+ of cardmembers, and that there were a small number of super users who were spending many millions of dollars per year in that category on the card. The card’s other bonus categories, including 4x points on direct hotel and airfare bookings, remain uncapped.

Bottom line

The Sapphire Reserve Business is undergoing two minor changes, with one being positive, and one being negative.

First, as of January 1, 2027, the card will get an additional two annual credits for The Edit by Chase Travel, for a total value of up to $1,000 per year. Next, as of November 15, 2026, the card’s 3x points bonus category on social media & search engine advertising will be capped at $1 million in spending per anniversary year.

On balance, I’d consider these to be positive changes, though I don’t think most cardmembers will be impacted by either update.

What do you make of these Sapphire Reserve Business changes?

We recently had an Edit property, Kimpton Pittman in Dallas, add on a phony $300 charge after check-out, negating use of the Chase credit. The GM wouldn't get back with either us or IHG Corporate in 2 weeks to discuss, but Chase reversed the invoice charge based on their own investigation. This so far has been a one-off for us after multiple Edit stays between 3 Reserve cards (including 1 CSRB) but worth bringing to...

Problem is that a two night stay is required. Many of the CSR benefits overlap with other cards anyway.

4 Edit credits plus 250 IHG and 300 travel credit is great deal. Throw in 2 $50 food gift cards as well. More than twice the cost.

So this card got upgraded to meh status for most people.

I would have given it more credit if it was $500 every 6 months or there was no 2 night limit as in FHR. At this point i do not want to pay a massive annual fee to Chase upfront and than put in the work.

lol more unnecessary spend to stay at an overpriced “luxury” hotel that you didn’t really need to stay at, to feel good about using the credits all of which you have to do every 3 months. Good god… no thanks.

I don't have the card so I'm not sure how the credits work; does it have to be 4 separate bookings of 2 nights each for it to trigger the full $1000 credit?

Chase is becoming a master at offering value to their marketing team to promote products without actually offering value to the end users. As you say, they know that these credits are too hard to use and that they basically just take the Edit's inflated prices back down to earth.

They can probably get away with this for a number of years given that Chase is the market-leading bank in the United States. But...

yeah its very revealing that they keep adding credits unprompted since the refresh a year ago. that almost never happens, yet they keep adding more and more to entice people. clearly the signups arent where they wanted.

Further irony: They launched that beta 'price-match' tool for The Edit, but only for certain users. Like, they know they're price-gauging via that platform. Difficult for them to save-face at this point, but I guess they're sorta, kinda, maybe trying, though, like, not really that hard.

The real value of The Edit isn't the $250. If you stay more than 2-3 nights, the inflated price eats it completely. But if you stay 2 nights, you still probably save $50-$150. Then you also get breakfast for 2 for 2 days, which can be expensive at a nice hotel. You also get $100 credit that can be used for dinner, spa, etc. That is the value in my opinion. Nice breakfast, $100 credit, per night price still slightly lower than booking direct.

Yep, but you can book via Amex FHR or any program like Virtuoso/Marriott Stars/Hyatt Prive etc to get similar or better benefits (eg guaranteed upgrade or guaranteed late checkout vs Edit's "subject to availability).

Also, I don't understand why Edit's selection is so eclectic - it often misses main luxury hotels in a city... A few months ago I looked at Taipei and there was nothing on the Edit list (and all usual suspects were...

This and the fact that usually Chase Edit prices are far higher than bookings via other channels, makes this program pretty useless for me. And no, I don't have time to go through price-match after booking.

thats hilarious because TPG/Brian Kelly has touted how great the advertising earnings are, and he's one of the few people impacted by the $1M cap lol

    1. 1990_ Diamond

Did you see TPG is ‘beta’ testing comments, again? Only on select articles, though, like their detailed review of Taco Bell’s loyalty program… remember, pro-business toxic-optimist talking points only! *facepalm*

    2. Eskimo Guest

thats hilarious because TPG/Brian Kelly doesn't run their ads anymore. He's just there as a PR sock puppet.
