FAA Makes NOTAMs More Masculine, Adopts “Gulf Of America” Naming

94

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the Trump administration has just published a couple of updates. With this, important safety notices for pilots will no longer be gender neutral, and Trump’s renaming of mountains and bodies of water will be reflected in official FAA charts, in order to double down on “American greatness.”

FAA updates NOTAMs, “Airmen” replace “Air Missions”

NOTAMs are notices to pilots, whereby pilots can be issued important safety advisories, whether it’s regarding a closed runway, or restricted airspace. Historically, the term NOTAM has stood for “Notice to Airmen.” However, in 2021, while Biden was president, the FAA updated that to “Notice to Air Missions.”

The FAA under Trump has now reversed that decision, as of February 2025. Per the bulletin:

Effective immediately, the term Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) is being changed to Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), and the title of FAA Order 7930.2 is being changed to “Notice to Airmen NOTAM).” All directives/publications referring to FAA Order 7930.2 must be updated as soon as practicable to reflect the order’s title. FAA Order 7930.2 will be updated as quickly as possible to reflect this change.

For what it’s worth, these advisories are almost always referred to as “NOTAMs” rather than by the full name of what they stand for, so the implications here will be quite limited. Clearly this is more symbolic, just as the change was in the first place, under Biden.

When the FAA under Biden decided to change the term “Airmen” to “Air Missions,” the goal was to be more inclusive with language. The reality is that the pilot profession has historically been dominated by men, and the idea is that language matters. If there’s an opportunity to be more inclusive, especially without taking something away from someone else, why not do it?

Meanwhile the FAA under Trump is obviously going in the opposite direction. The Trump administration has been heavily focused on battling “wokeness” and “DEI,” so clearly views this as being part of the problem.

FAA updates charts for Gulf of America, Mount McKinley

NOTAMs being updated from “Air Missions” to “Airmen” isn’t the only update under Trump’s FAA. The FAA has also announced changes to the charts that it uses, including geographic name changes. Specifically, official FAA charts will be updated to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and for Mount Denali to be renamed as Mount McKinley.

This update reflects Trump’s recent executive order. Per the bulletin:

Please be advised that the FAA is in the process of updating our data and charts to show a name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and a name change from Denali to Mount McKinley. This will be targeted for the next publication cycle.

This Charting Notice implements President Trump’s direction in Executive Order 14172, “restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” that the names be changed.

Bottom line

The FAA has just issued some updates, which impact NOTAMs and navigation charts. NOTAMs are becoming more gender specific again, with “Airmen” replacing “Air Missions.” On top of that, FAA charts are being updated to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and to rename Mount Denali as Mount McKinley.

I have nothing constructive to add here (I’m proud of myself for the level of restraint I’m exercising, to be honest!), but rather am just reporting the details…

3 fatal crashes since Trump took office, but this is important? He sure is making America great...

  2. quorumcall Diamond

These idiots looked at the DCA crash and thought to themselves “let’s double down on partisan anti-safety nonsense!”

Trump will have blood on his hands, although via PEPFAR impact tracker it’s clear he already does

  3. Stefan Guest

The NOTAM should have never been changed, it's a sensible decision to swap it back. The whole Gulf thing makes very little sense but whatever. As long as it doesn't cost money go ahead.

I know your intentions are good in being as “restrained as possible.” But in doing that you are giving in to the lunacy and obeying the dictator in advance. There is nothing wrong with voicing opposition to hatred and stupidity.

    1. VladG Diamond

Contrary to what you've been fed, having a different opinion on matters doesn't automatically qualify as either "hatred" or "stupidity".

    2. Ralph4878 Gold

"Different opinions" are things we can disagree on, but matters that negatively impact the lived experiences of others or actually seek to harm or erase others? No, not going to agree to disagree on that. Centering straight white maleness in everything in American life is not a difference of opinion - its racist, homophobic, and misogynist.

Conservatives aren't used to winning. They've consistently lost every battle of our lifetimes. The knock-on effect is that they're uncomfortable with winning (viewing it as shameful). Perhaps worse is that they don't understand what winners do.

The first thing conquerors do is tear down the statues and memorials of their enemies. Thats why the BLM rioters tore everything down in 2020. It's why progressives tore down the meaning of words and erected their own words...

The first thing conquerors do is tear down the statues and memorials of their enemies. Thats why the BLM rioters tore everything down in 2020. It's why progressives tore down the meaning of words and erected their own words in place of traditional values.

Because it was worth it for the enemy to change, it is worth it for you to upend. And in fact little is more important than language. To offer a brief overview:

1.) Marx. Everything is a struggle between societal classes.
2.) Frankfurt School of thought (1937), ideas hold more power and dominant narratives must be interrogated. (Max Horkheimer)
3.) 1950s-1960s, Lacan’s Linguistic Theory, language is privileged, can be used to oppose preceding structuralism.
4.) 1960s-70s, Derrida and Foucault, postmodernism and post-structuralism. Cultures can be changed by attacking words and tearing down meaning.
5.) 1980s-present (not completely novel, but the most visible growth). Poststructuralism is coupled with something new, primarily critical theory. Whereas poststructuralism was concerned with tearing down and analyzing meaning, critical theory saw new ways to power. Not content to merely tear down meaning, critical theorists also purposefully built up un-meaning to prevent societal immune responses to idea pathogens.

As Lucky's post itself evidences, this is an incredible win for the right. It shows incredible organization to root out such an esoteric, small thing.

And of course many flights aren't "missions," while we are all a part of mankind, so this is a great restoration of sanity.

The solution? Kick the red states out of the union. Don't even let them pay taxes. Remove them.

    1. Stefan Guest

It would be easier to take your few Blue states that are left and leave. But better hurry because very soon the number of those is dwindling as well. MAGA is coming for you, get ready!

Don't worry, switching to the completely non-merit-based loyalty hiring system that P2025 calls for (and that is obviously being implemented) within the federal government will really solve problems like that.

Thank goodness that there's no expense associated with changing the names of whole military bases (printing, signage, etc) or geographic landmarks or FAA FAA publications or agencies, because the whole goal of the administration is to avoid waste of money!

      1. Biden didn't change Gulf of America/Mexico, only Trump did.

His regular use of dehumanizing terms like "animals" and "scum" has normalized cruel rhetoric in mainstream politics. This isn't partisan observation - it's documented evidence showing how Trump's "casual savagery" has coarsened American political discourse since 2015. And he's doing it deliberately - as he told Lesley Stahl in 2016, he attacks people to "discredit and demean them so no one will believe them."

Trump won in 2024 not because of popularity (he got a historically small 1.5% margin) but because of voter frustration with inflation and immigration, plus record support from working-class voters of all backgrounds. He also repeatedly lied about having nothing to do with Project 2025, his detailed authoritarian blueprint for a second term, even though it was written by his former officials and matches his campaign promises.

Which doesn't make much sense, seeing as the name "Denali" is specifically in reference to (and reverence of) the height of the mountain itself.

It's not a "compromise" - the National Park is an American park, but to Indigenous Peoples of the region, it's their land, which had always been called 'Denali.' The REPUBLICAN representatives in the House and Senate wanted to do the right thing and at least name the mountain 'Denali' to honor the land and Indigenous peoples of it...but no, Trump couldn't leave it be.

If NOTAM was fine enough as an abbreviation, why go to so much trouble to have to redefine the words underlying it? Why not just leave it as an abbreviation (or initialism or whatever the right term)? Someone made it their quest to make the words feel "equitable" or inclusive, without being appointed to do so, and they did a dumb job at it. And that's why it's a target of the pendulum swinging the other way now.

If half the country feels that kindness, compassion and mercy are not part of their value system, sure. Be it. The world is watching the new image that’s being painted.

This is why Ben needs moderators. I can't believe there's a comment here just accusing people of being pedophiles. Absolutely gross.

    3. dfw88 Guest

To be fair, he accused people of being PDF files, which, taken literally, is just an incredibly weird thing to say.

In all seriousness though, I completely agree with you. Our public discourse these days has fallen to a level of degeneracy that's hard to fathom.

    4. Robin Guest

Since when did it become "progressive" dogma to cry for censorship any time an opinion is voiced that you do not agree with?

    5. Ole Guest

Since the bigots and xenophobes started banning books because their fragile ego and small dick couldn't do its job.

Another Trump nut job. I’m surprised he’s not changed the name to the gulf of melania and Mount Barron Trump.
This is proof that when Americans are stupid, no one else comes close to them.

All those red neck yokels who voted for him who have no passports and can’t even find the US on a map.

Regarding tariffs why does the rest of the world not buy American cars ? Because...

Regarding tariffs why does the rest of the world not buy American cars ? Because they are s—t. Simple.

Meanwhile Europe and the rest of the world can look towards China and the rest of Asia who are thinking this is fantastic news

Just wrapped up reading an article yesterday where a guy accusing the dems of being --you know what--- was arrested for the very thing he was accusing them of. (Happened 2 or 3 days ago).

So yeah, a reminder the ad hominem means literally zip, or is potentially even self-reflective.

    8. James Guest

@Endre. Cool, just casually accusing readers who vote Democrats of being pedophiles when there is precisely zero evidence of that. This is how you demonise half the country and trample over their rights,

    9. Timtamtrak Diamond

“PDF files?” What nonsense attempt at an insult is that?

Very curious to know when all these very important actions will decrease the groceries prices which is what he promised :0)

    1. JS Guest

I thought a dozen of eggs was supposed to be half-price on "Day 1". Hahahaha. What happened?? He didn't lie to us - did he??????? Surely not.......

Sardines used to be $2.99 but are now about $1.69. Pre-pandemic, then we're sometimes as low as $1.09.

Gulf of America is really stupid. It should be Gulf of Texas.

    3. Mark Guest

Wow. Sardines. A staple in every American’s life…

These people are all incompetent crackheads to the point where it'd be hilarious if some of their bullshit didn't have real consequences.

Yeah, sounds like a "Registered Independent". Pretty much nailed the MAGA propaganda talking points there. I missed the part of your comment about billionaire and corporate greed driving massive inflation. I'm not sure how that was Biden's fault. But by all means, let's give them even more tax breaks and subsidies, at the expense of the average American. What a joke.

Man, the small-dick energy(ness) of all of this..... So typical of Conservative men, who fear above all else, having to EVER compete on equal terms with anyone other than their own mediocre selves.
