Austrian Airlines’ Adorable New Safety Video

3

Austrian Airlines has just unveiled its new safety video, and I’m a huge fan…

Austrian Airlines’ miniature, animated safety video

Star Alliance member Austrian Airlines has a new safety video, which is sure to capture peoples’ attention. The production uses 3D animation techniques to reveal a miniature Austrian world hidden inside the cabin of an aircraft.

Each scene of the safety video features an element that reflects a unique cultural aspect of Austria, from a yodeler, to coffeehouse pastries, to Vienna landmarks. The film nicely integrates the travel experience, safety, and culture, which is a great combination.

For example, the film begins with the camera zooming in on an overhead locker, which opens to reveal a tiny ground crew guiding passenger luggage into place. In the Prater scene, a suitcase opens to reveal a diorama with a ferris wheel, fairground, and trams.

The video was created in a collaboration with travel media agency Spafax, and coincides with the introduction of Austrian’s new Boeing 787-9s. The video is currently available on select Austrian flights, and as of August 1, 2024, should be available on all long haul flights of the carrier.

Here’s how David Kondo, Austrian’s Senior Director of Brand Experience, describes the new video:

“Our new safety video delivers critical safety information in an engaging and fun narrative that captures the essence of Austrian’s hospitality and character. The benchmark for innovative safety videos is high, but I couldn’t be prouder of the team and our partner Spafax in creating something truly fresh and unique that transports our customers to Austria from the very start of their journey.”

I love this new safety video!

Many airlines put a lot of effort into their safety videos nowadays, and view it as an extension of their marketing platform. Admittedly everyone has different preferences, so we won’t all agree on which videos are best.

Personally, this might just be one of my favorite safety videos I’ve ever seen. That comes down to three main points:

  • It’s cute without being annoying; some safety videos are fun to watch the first time, but are terrible for frequent flyers, while I don’t think anyone will develop strongly negative feelings about this video
  • It’s unique, and does a great job highlighting Austrian culture, which is important to the airline in general, as Austrian integrates so many aspects of Austrian culture into its inflight experience (like the special coffee menu)
  • I find the instructions to still be pretty clear, as nowadays so many safety videos are highly distracting and way too abstract as well, while I appreciate that the instructions all still make sense, and actual airplane parts are shown (even if they’re miniature)

Bottom line

Austrian Airlines is rolling out a new safety video, which is sure to delight children and adults alike. The animated video takes place in a miniature world, and highlights safety instructions clearly while also showcasing aspects of Austria.

What do you make of Austrian Airlines’ new safety video?

i agree, well done AUSTRIAN . . . for those, who know there service, the country and a bit about AUSTRIAN Airlines, the video makes a lot of sense. Sacher Cake, Austrian Melange, the Alps, they did forget the Almdudler (herbal Lemonade, that ONLY OS serves) but, i think it's a bit long, luckily they only use that on 787, a short taxiway after pushback like at most Greek or Eastern European airports, this could...

(e.g. Innsbruck, Salzburg, Stuttgart, Santorini with very short taxiways, depending on take-off direction, it could cause trouble)

Austrian is solid. Their European business class catering is kind of sad (sandwiches in a box), the lounges in Vienna could be better (the lounge in Innsbruck is pretty nice but not operated by OS) and Miles and is More is worthless for award tickets but otherwise OS is modernizing their long haul fleet, their long haul business class is very good, very reliable service and schedule in CEE, their BoB catering in Economy is...
