Today Only: Frontier Is Offering 99% Off Tickets (Taxes & Fees Excluded)

About two month ago Frontier ran a sale where they offered 90% off base fares in many markets, and then a month later they offered the same promotion again.

Well, I guess that wasn’t generous enough, because they’re back with an even more generous promotion this time.

For tickets booked by tonight (11:59PM ET on Monday, October 23, 2017), Frontier is offering 99% off the base fare when using promotion code SAVE99. Now, as you’d expect, there are some restrictions.

Most significantly, this promotion is only valid for domestic travel on the following dates (one-way or roundtrip tickets qualify):

Oct. 28, 30, 31, 2017. Nov 1, 4, 6-8, 11, 14, 15, 29, 30, 2017. Dec. 2, 4-6, 9, 12, 13, 2017

Even within the US, the following markets are excluded from the promotion:

Atlanta, GA to/from New York City, NY (LaGuardia)
Atlanta, GA to/from San Francisco, CA
Atlanta, GA to/from San Juan, PR
Atlanta, GA to/from Salt Lake City, UT

Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN to/from Fort Myers, FL
Chicago, IL to/from San Antonio, TX
Chicago, IL to/from Trenton, NJ
Philadelphia, PA to/from San Juan, PR

The savings do indeed seem to be 99% off the base fare, though keep in mind that Frontier has really low base fares, so in reality you’re not actually paying a hundredth of what you’d otherwise pay.

For example, take a Tampa to Denver flight on December 5, where the “Non-Club Price” is $79 (you can join Frontier’s Discount Den Program for $50 per year).

Meanwhile with this sale, the price is knocked down to $34, which represents a $44.55 discount on the $44.97 base fare, before factoring in the $33.23 in taxes and carrier imposed surcharges.

So in the end you’re still paying ~40% of the fares, but that’s just because the taxes and fees don’t change. Unfortunately the $19 one-way carrier interface surcharge isn’t discounted, which is money that still lands in Frontier’s pocket.

This is potentially a great deal, though do keep in mind that Frontier charges for everything, from seat assignments to carry-ons to food and drinks. Travis shared his experience flying with Frontier recently, and as he cautioned, one of the biggest downsides to low cost carriers is their lack of frequencies in markets, so when flights are canceled or delayed, you have very few options.

Does anyone plan on taking advantage of this Frontier fare sale?

(Tip of the hat to Running with Miles)

  1. Ok. So I woukd rather sit draped in an Isreali Flag singing Tora on Iran Air than every fly Frontier

  2. This may not work out the way the airline hoped. I checked airfare to Puerto Vallarta, having missed the fine print that the deal was domestic-only, and was horrified to find that on the date I chose their normal fare was only a bus token and a small cup of coffee cheaper than a legacy airline.
