United Airlines is changing its uniform policy, eliminating what was a cool form of expression for frontline employees. I think the change is logical (unfortunately). However, I can’t help but be a little cynical about the timeline of this announcement…

Is this another move for UA to butter up the Trump Administration for potential near future favorably? Likely yes, and that's not anything new. From a business standpoint you're there to do a job not tell the world your views and opinions, even if they're good in nature.

Kirby is shrewd, so this (plus his weird tariff glazing) does strike me as Trump sycophancy. Time will tell if this is a good strategy — people who express this type of blind deference to Trump have a habit of getting burned, but if it results in a relatively smooth acquisition then maybe the ickiness will have been worth it.

Does this also mean no more rainbow flag pins? If so, that is really terrible, considering how many employees, especially those who are customer facing typically wear them.

All this nonsense for some JFK slots. Talk about abandoning your morals and principles.

This will be the first time I’ve disagreed with Ben.

What does the timing matter if it’s just a sensible policy? I’m about 7 million miles and never noticed what pins the FAs might be wearing.

And given his own post, not yet knowing the full context of the proposed UA/B6 partnership, why bring it up in this post?

I’m true blue liberal (also gay minority), and I agree with the new policy.

In the movie Judgment At Nuremberg, the common refrain was "No one ever thought it would become what it did." But, it did.

May 28 is also the start date for the new uniforms and this change was rolled out with the new uniform and appearance standards. So I’m assuming they’re using the uniform refresh as a chance to refresh other appearance standards as well.

If it is to avoid controversy, then no flag pins at all. Sadly the US flag communicates something too these days --- a flavor of nationalism that is not embraced by many, its symbolism very different these days an polarizing itself. As for timing -- new uniform standards were released today and that was one of the things listed. I do not doubt political motivation, but that is at least an easy thing to hide it in. It was one single line item on a very comprehensive document.

The left wing morons are out in force. "My uniform should allow me to express my politics, my sexual desires, my feelings and what I eat for breakfast. It's a racist, homophobic and anti vegan policy!!!" screams the purple haired matron who is there for your safety.

You can't make this sh *t up.

They need language pins. If they make it a requirement to be able to speak the language well, nobody will be able to pass a test in Gazan dialect of Arabic (Palestininan Arabic).

People comment here as if the only flag pins United employees wear are Palestinian and LGBTQ flags, but that's not the case. Earlier this year I complained to United about a flight attendant who wore a MAGA pin, and United sent me an apology. United staff in uniform shouldn't wear political pins IMO.

Out of curiosity, does someone wearing a MAGA pin really affect you? You don't have to agree with what they are representing, but everyone has a right (in the US) to represent what they believe in, whether right or wrong. For context, I am not from the US before someone says I am a Trump fan.

Kirby could have banned those pins a few months ago, but he didn't. He was singing a very different tune then. So why now?

This is exactly correct, but Ben et al are reading way more into it. The appearance standards are being modified effective May 28 to coincide with the launch of the new uniform. This also happened when the subCO/subUA groups became one under a common uniform - updated uniform standards.

I agree with this. Flight attendants are there for your safety. Not as conversation starters depending on what pin they wear.

Considering some people love to jam their political views down our throats, this is a refreshing move. I don’t care what your views are in the Middle East or Russia/Ukraine conflict. I don’t care who you want to sleep with. I don’t care whether you love or hate Trump. Just do your job…. It’s what I am paying you for. I

Took long enough. If FAs want to be social justice warriors, do it on own time and not as reps of UA in a situation where customers are forced to interact with them.

Yup crazy! They shut people’s businesses down and forced people to get an experimental mRNA “vaccine” otherwise they’d lose their job. They separated families from their dying loved ones in the name of “safety.” Although they did allow 10’s of thousands in the street to have “mostly peaceful protests” while city blocks burned all across the country. President Biden even pardoned the head doctor, being Fauchi for knowingly lying about game of function research, origin of Covid (psst to liberals, Trump was right, it was from a lab), lied about efficacy and safety. You are right. We hadn’t seen this type of tyranny since the Nazis. All in the name of liberal science.

The real problem is hiring Hamas supporters as flight attendant in the first place. No one would want a flight attendant with a Nazi flag

The only flag they should be wearing is the US flag. Why in the world are the wearing flags of other countries, territories, nonexistent places, etc? You are an AMERICAN flag carrier. No need for anything else. You don't see other countries' airlines wearing all these crazy flags of other countries. Politics has no place here.

ridiculous. I don't care about a flight attendants sexual preference. why does that matter? I'd love to see what Qatar, Emirates, or one of these Gulf Carriers have to say about "pride" pins. Thats why they are kicking everyone's a$$. They aren't worried about stupid stuff that doesn't matter. Just providing a good product and getting you to and from your destination.

When I last checked, United was private incorporation, owned by its shareholders from near and far. I don’t see any reason why they should wear flag pins at all.

Most other airlines include the language flags in the official name tag - and require some evidence of the respective language skills, before actually doing so.

Of course they do wear flags of other countries, like the post says they are very helpful in identifying who speaks what language. Americans obviously aren't well known for their cosmopolitanism and language skills, so it may be that their flag carriers have decided that the proportion of their cabin crew that speaks anything other than English is too small for them to bother with such an initiative.

It doesn’t matter whether you care about it or not, it matters that the society respect them as human beings no matter whether they are gay, trans; etc. Something the origin countries of ME3 do not, btw. And the USA are on the course to turn back time and dehumanise people.

Kind regards from Germany - that doesn’t end well

"Talk about abandoning your morals and principles."

People need to get this through their heads: publicly-traded corporations do not HAVE morals nor principles.

Their only objective, is to do what it takes (and be what they must) to sustain and/or raise shareholder value. That's it.

I never understood why this was a thing in the US. It's ridiculous, you're at a work, in a customer facing role, representing the company, not yourself or whatever connection you feel towards other countries. Customer don't give a crap about those things. Just about every company I worked for which used uniforms was pretty strict that you wear the uniform and nothing else. Wearing this kind of crap would be unthinkable on this side of the pond, and it doesn't matter whether you're cabin crew, supermarket cashier or a travel agent.

As for languages you speak, most airlines include that on the name tag. Simple.

As a language speaker and the child of immigrants, having the flag of my second language on my uniform helps to signify that I am one that speaks the language and makes customers recognize it quickly. Why should anyone be forced to wear an American flag when obviously we all speak English and many of us have immigrated. All of you that say someone should only wear an American flag is stepping on the freedom you all claim to support. Inclusion means supporting every culture, not just one.

Felix, someone who belongs to a cult of personality will blindly accept the personality's official line and will regurgitate it. "It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds . . . " - Adolf Hitler

I have to say that when visiting America last month and going to a concert I felt very uncomfortable having to stand at the beginning while everyone sang to the flag, given what that flag represents to the current administration.
Not standing did not seem like a sensible option, although I will ponder that for if there is a next time.
Would not have been a problem last year.

@Hank Tarn, like removing exhibits of military heroes from the Smithsonian, the DoD, and National Parks . . . all of whom happen to be non-white. Strike from history the name of the first casualty of the Revolutionary War (at the battle of Lexington and Concord) because he happened to be black. Strike from history the most decorated US military unit (the 442nd Regiment) because they were Japanese-Americans. It's not woke. It's hiding the truth.

@A Flight Attendant, you are correct. But, their position is not about "respecting" the US. It's about race. Political strategist Lee Atwater noted that racists could no longer openly say "nigger." Instead, racists needed to cloak their views in catch phrases. This is what is really being done.

Speculation shared has sometimes been referred to as gossip which is not a positive thing. If the update was attached to Trump, it seems slow, what if they have been struggling with service to customers vs. protecting their employees? What if the availability of pins has decreased, making it hard to accurately identify all languages? What if???? Perhaps what I'd system to you is simply a timing issue? Why create sus?

The flight attendants have been issued name bars that identify language qualifications. No need for a pin. The new rule is only two pins allowed on the uniform, including the union pin.
Everyone has blown this WAY out of proportion. Shame on the author for stoking the fire. They switch to a new uniform on May 28 and uniform appearance standards were updated as a refresher.
Why didn't you report that females will now have to have their hair UP at all times (except on their break) if its longer than their shoulders? Furthermore, Country flag pins weren't the only policy updates.

I would ban all flag pins. I think we all know United is a U.S. airline, and I don’t need to know if my flight attendant has a special allegiance or fondness to the United States or any other country. It was a good idea if it conveyed their ability to speak another language. But if there’s any political motive beyond that, I’d rather the FA keep it private while working.

If the idea is to convey to passengers which foreign language(s) a flight attendant speaks, use a pin with the name(s) of the language(s), not a pin of a country's flag.

United employee here. 28 May 2025 is the rollout date for the new uniform that’s been in development for years now. As far as timing goes, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to change the pin policy, if they want to. What I’ve seen in the new guidance is that the US flag is the only flag pin allowed now. There’s a separate device to identify Language Qualified Flight Attendants.

IDK, this change seems uncontroversial to me.

For years the left has screeched about staying out of my bedroom or keep your morality to yourself, etc. And yet here we have the same left screeching about how fascist it is when they are not allowed to shove their sexuality, political beliefs, etc in others faces. Of course the left doesn't understand hypocrisy but the rest of the world does.

May 28 is the launch date for United's new uniforms for all public facing employees. Perfect time to make a change for anything uniform related. Whether this is a popular or unpopular move, the timing is right as any uniform guidelines that are changing can be rolled out all at the same time.
