Transavia Flight Overbooked, Captain Asks For Volunteers To Sit In Cockpit

Agree, I'm jealous to some degree too! But I wouldn't put a young child passenger in the cockpit because of potential that they could be distracting.

Some people really just should stay in their lane.

I would be very surprised if this was an idea that the captain came up with. I am yet to come across a captain or first officer that do not abhor the idea of two random people joining them in the cockpit for five hours. Absolutely unheard of. This is very clearly a corporate idea.
Personally- I do not like this at all. While I would love being in the cockpit for a flight, I fully understand why this is a terrible idea safety wise.

It’s the wrong regulation. EASA is for Safety, Security is regulated with EU 2015/1998 and managed by The European Commission. Access to the cockpit is a clear violation and should be followed up by the Securiy division at the relevant authority.

I would pay $$ for the opportunity to fly in a cockpit jumpseat.

As an av geek, it’s a treat to sit in the jump-seat of any commercial airline, but as a mere passenger on a European carrier, that’s wild.

Great to sit up front for takeoff and landing, but the other 4.5 hours flying time in a jump-seat? Oof.

For real. We say ‘never forget’ but clearly some are. Not sure where you’re based, but glad you’re still around. Sadly, too many first responders (and nearby residents) in the NYC area have had serious long-term illnesses from the smoke/dust.

Back in the day, it was quite common for a first class passenger on CX to be invited into the cockpit (L-1011s, mostly) and sit in the jump seat for landing. Kai Tak, at night was just phenomenal!! Did it a few times, also Kimpo and Shanghai, but that approach to Hong Kong was really something special!

I have travelled in. the cockpit on AF and Transvia MANY times. They are generally extremely relaxed as long as you do not pose a threat to the flight safety. You simplyy have to ask and generally they say yes. I've done multiples landings in the cockpit by just saying I was an AvGeek. And let's be honest, It's not a 10year girl who is going to hijack a plane. This person needs to relax a bit...

@Ben - I’m pretty sure you’re reading the relevant regulations wrong. Subsection (b) does not override subsection (a), and only works in tandem with it. That being said, subsection (a) provides the list of exception as to who is allowed into the cockpit and there is no exception that these passengers would fit into.

A few years ago, on a snowy couple of days in Berlin, with a number of cancellations for my flight I finally managed to board and it turned out they had issued boarding passes for two people with the exact same name forbtge same seat. Worried as I was about getting home, while standing in the galley, the captain assured me that it was within his perogative to seat people in the jump seat, so I'd not be left behind in Berlin. Sadly there was actually a regular passenger seat available at the end of boarding.

That all being said, I am sure the captain would not have offered it had it not been within his perogative.

I also see both sides and I totally get this passenger's point regarding safety.

This being said, we're living times where most Gulf carriers and essentially gambling the lives of passenger and crews doing drone-drodging at their hubs, and although I understand the economical aspects, I find this far more concerning...

That occured to me too, especially since he's quoting an American rule that is not applicable on this route+airline combination.

@Ben, here is a fun hypothetical dilemma. Lets say you are in long haul business class and receive this offer to sit in the jump seat for the entire flight.

How about if you are international first class? Or better, in Etihad the apartment?

Where do you draw the line and keep the premium seat or take the jump seat?

I am surprised that there were not at least two non rev passengers on board that could have been compelled to accept the two jump seats. The manifest would have shown them as first to be bumped in case of need.

So these fake reddit stories are news now? I'm sure transavia would still need to investigate the claims even if it did not happen.

Actually CAT.GEN.MPA.135 (a) has three “or” statements, of which (3) might well apply:

“permitted by and carried in accordance with instructions contained in the operations manual.”

I suspect given the lack of regulatory action here, you will find the operations manual provided coverage for this.

You are quite right that (b) does not negate compliance with (a).

I was fortunate enough to have this opportunity once as a kid in the late eighties on the then Indian Airlines. There was an emergency transport case brought on board a right before departure and I was put in a jumpseat in the cockpit for a short flight. It was an amazing experience.

I was allowed to sit behind the captain on a short haul European flight in 1983 due to overbooking.
One of my best flight experiences ever.

While it would be cool to sit there I don't agree with your point. Actually the rules you posted seem to indicate the person has to be a crew member of the flight to enter.
