Regional airline ExpressJet liquidated nearly a year ago. The new owners of the company are now planning to revive the airline with a Boeing 777… sort of. Is this the dumbest idea ever, or kind of smart?

Just a comment on your Air Belgium caption about success as a charter operator. Air Belgium has been nothing but a spectacular train smash as a scheduled, charter and cargo operator. They only still exist because their new Chinese shareholders seem to want to keep the AOC alive for wider reasons than the financial wellbeing of the Air Belgium entity alone. So not exactly a good example.
I must admit I find it odd that it's a trivially simple process to buy an AOC and completely restaff, reconfigure, etc. to the point that you effectively have a brand-new airline; yet it is difficult (at best) to actually create a brand-new airline.
