How do they enforce this? Do you have to show up at the airport check-in desk with birth certificates and marriage certificates? Or do you just self certify?

The only restricted program I've done it with is KE, and yes, I was able to self-certify that my domestic partner was my domestic partner, it was no problem. Obviously can't speak for the others.

For JAL and ANA you have to register the person in your account with the appropriate kinship definition before booking. They may or may not ask you to document that.

Both airlines accepts same sex partners as spouses, but Japan does not legally recognise same sex partnership so not all relations can be documented.

Thanks. I was wondering about the same-sex spouse question for the airlines which restrict to family members- ANA, JAL, Asiana and Korean in this list - as Japan and SK don't have same sex marriage.
