This is truly one of the most bizarre aviation stories we’ve seen in a long time. An American boarded a flight in Belize with a knife, hijacked it and demanded the plane fly to the United States, and was then shot by someone onboard. Huh?!?

Apparently the hijacker forgot about a basic principle that I learned a long time ago: "They pull a knife, you pull a gun. That's the Chicago way."

Clearly the hijacker was not mentally stable. I wonder if one of those service animals could have helped...

Sad, we are continuing to fail our veterans.

Hopefully the rains will have subsided before you arrive and all ex-U.S. military personnel will be suitably sedated.
Enjoy your visit safely …. leave only footprints and take home only good memories.

We flew Tropic Air BZE-SPR-BZE a couple years ago, both flights were enjoyable, no drama.

The hijacker used to be a high school football coach in the St Louis area:

So, I read on one news source that the guy with a gun didn't shoot the hijacker until during the landing. Does anyone have any clue why he waited to hours?? Why didn't he shoot the hijacker after he stabbed the first person? Anyone know or have any ideas why you'd wait?

Interesting about the weapons on the plane. Slip the knife thru security, but then a gun too? Whew!

I live oversees in a country of the same type as Belize. I have done my fair share on those small "airlines"/charter companies in the Cessna piston aircraft. For those flights, the security is a lot different. I always carry a leatherman and they see it, look it over and give it back and let me take it on the plane. So, it's not surprising to me at all that they were allowed weapons on the plane. If I had my guess, security prolly knew they had them...

Belize is tiny, he could have booked a bus across the Mexican border which was right there, for less than the flight he tried to hijack. If he really wanted out of Belize for some reason.

But yeah, crazy or substance abuse or mental health issues (or all 3 often go together).
