131-Room Four Seasons Cartagena, Colombia, Now Open In 1920s Landmark

Are you familiar with the hotel market in CTG in general? The Sofitel Legend seems great, always wanted to go there. It used to look extremely good value (I've only been to Cartagena on the way to somewhere else so I chose a more pedestrian hotel), it's still a bit cheaper than this but I suppose the city is proving a bit too popular with Americans for the prices to stay at bargain levels.

We are planning a long weekend in Cartagena later this year. Good to know. This is indeed a possibility (for one night only at those prices LOL )

$525 per night? I’ve spent that at the Courtyard by Marriott in NYC. This hotel makes me want to visit Columbia

... or even better, Colombia.

I've stayed at the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara twice. It's a superb hotel in an historic building. Beautiful place.

Colombia is wonderful and Cartagena is super accessible and a great introduction to the historic Caribbean for newbies.

That said, as with all luxury properties in the developing world I try to be cognizant of how much higher priced they are versus "normal" hotels.

At a certain threshold in each place, the pricing becomes sort of obscene in the context of what locals make, what the employees could afford, etc. Similar with those $1000/night resorts in Thailand.

And it also makes you a mark the moment somebody becomes aware of where you're staying.

That said, it looks gorgeous, but I doubt I'd be willing to stay there. Stick to Four Seasons in resort islands and western cities, not in a working-class artist community (Getsemani) that has only gentrified in the last decade and where that nightly rate is a middle-class monthly income.

The foyer looks like a Southern plantation mansion before the civil war.

Great, just a month ago the government took out El Mencho and riots broke out all over the country and burned cars busses and Costcos. And now they are trying to lure us back to Mexico by opening a new hotel?? Lol no thanks.
