This is indeed a really positive sign in the Middle East and a sign that commercial relationships can break historic oppositions.
That said, Etihad's network provides additional connectivity which is valuable to El Al's generally westward focused network while Etihad could use a unique advantage in the competitive Middle East market where Etihad is pretty small relative to its chief competitors.

The six wealthy Gulf states and Israel must join forces to fight the growing threat of Iran and Hezbollah in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen. The Gulf states are flexing their petro power to influence western governments, policies and coalition to their advantages. Tourism revenues are a drop in the bucket compared to the petro dollars.
