@Daniel - great review! I loved my stay at Al Husn two years ago but thought the rooms were a bit dated and the place was in need of a refresh. Looks like from your photos they may have updated things a bit. Al Husn is definitely worth the extra money for the exclusivity and a more on-point Shangri-La experience.
The Italian restaurant was good as well as the fish market one.
I'd also recommend readers to take the free shuttle to/from the Souk in the nearby town which has a nice waterfront setting. The drive at sunset through the mountains was incredible.

This is a very well done report. Oman is a beautiful country and one of the last remaining 'authentic' destinations in the GCC. The Chedi (Muscat) sea food restaurant is highly recommended. In terms of activities go hiking. There are natural pools in areas and the scenery is exceptional. Hope you have fun.
I've been meaning to take the short trip to Oman for a few years now and shortlisted this hotel for me and the family. We ended up going to Dubai (again) instead earlier this year.
One thing I did notice that the price is cheaper than similar hotels in Dubai.
Daniel, please take photos of the menu. You've said it's impressive - I for one would have appreciated being able to see why.
My friend lives in one of the villas on the Shangri-La grounds there. It is always a joy to visit! 🙂
NEVER again. Al Husn was my 1st stay at a Shangri la.....never again will I fall for their DECEPTIVE room categories. I booked the 2nd highest room category "deluxe ocean view", when taken to the room however it was a mountain view overlooking the hotel next door. It was unacceptable but of course I was told "nothing else was available". I began making arrangements to transfer to the nearby Ritz Carlton. Suddenly they had a "deluxe ocean view" available. I took it but regretted that choice ever since: exceptionally rude service at the beach restaurant, zero service by the pool after 4 pm, etc..... Shangri la lost a customer for good that day.
I'll stick with a Four Seasons/Mandarin/Ritz properties.
