I tend to book awards one way coming back home anyway. This way I can utilize my SWUs on the outbound, especially since AA flights one way to Asia are usually cheap.
Another option is to book your outbound on another airline/currency. Then fly EK on the return.
Ben - Isn't the problem here that Emirates is charging JAL the fuel surcharge who is passing it on to the customer? If that's the case, it's really Emirates who I would be pissed at.
On r/t tickets originating in an area with no YQ EK does not collect fuel surcharge on either direction. Would that be different for r/t award tickets?

I'm based in Amman so while this is a devaluation it's not as bad as those in the US. About $800 for the YQ EK for biz round trip from there to the west coast. $800 more than before but 80k SPG + $800 for round trip business with one short stop on a great product still seems like the best option for people based in the middle east looking to travel back and forth to the US in biz.
too much of a hassle, why would i wanna originate in another place to "come back"to the US and have an extra leg open?
Easier to suck it up and pay the $1600, which is penny change compared to the full price of a First Class Emirates ticket 20K-30K
That's great news, then! All non-US residents have to do now is just to preposition themselves outside the US.

Oh lucky, you always whine when a company close up your loopholes. There's a reason why they do that. Its smart business to keep people like you from ripping them off.
Since US-based people have like thousands of times more chances to accumulate miles than those living in the rest of the world, I think they can live with that.
