Around the middle of last year, Emirates and FlyDubai announced that they’d greatly strengthen ties, which is a logical move. The airlines’ fleets complement one another —FlyDubais fleet consists exclusively of 737s, while Emirates fleet consists of 777s and A380s. 737s can operate to destinations that 777s and A380s can’t operate to, and vice versa.

I'd argue it represents an improvement in Y as well, because 3-3 in 737 is something it was designed for, unlike 3-4-3 in a 777.
You can look at it as maximizing frequency because the alternative approach, reducing capacity using 777, they would have eliminated service some days.
What doesn't make sense? They're cutting capacity to match demand and instead of going day-of-week, they're downguaging so that they can maintain 7 frequencies.
I think it's more saying "hey, we're keeping this daily on a smaller plane rather than switching to 4x weekly on the bigger one."
It's amazing they could fill up a 777 every day to somewhere like Croatia in the middle of winter!

Not to mention that FlyDubai on board service in business class is abysmal compared to Emirates.
I am uncertain this is seasonal. I suspect a 737 is sufficient for Zagreb for the majority of the year.
According to discussion on www.exyuaviation.com portal LF in the summer season is very good and flights are often operated by 2 class 777 with 428 seats. QR and TK fly 2x daily from ZAG with A320/B737 year around. KE announced 3x weekly ICN ZAG from Sep so Emirates got strong competitor in market which brings more than 400000 tourists per year.
To be fair, they probably could somewhat fill it decently but with junk fares. Remember CROATIA might not be the attraction/destination, its more or less Croatians heading out to warmer places 😉
People have to realize that its actually very easy to fill seats to/from most places, just not always at the fares an airline wants or desires. When we see route cancellations, sometimes the airline knows it can make X amount more utilizing that aircraft elsewhere, even when the route was profitable.
Question is; what do they do with the 777? Park it I suspect.
If they are still parking a handful of aircraft in the height of peak season, one can imagine the Winter.
