I feel like there have been several stories regarding this card in the past few months. Not sure why.
Anyhow, my response is the same as those other times: The Platinum card offers 2x miles at gas stations and restaurants all for as lower fee. Individual goals differ, but if the goal is to earn as many miles as possible to redeem for flights, then the Platinum card is the way to go. I guess I'm just a bit frustrated that the higher cost card earns fewer miles. If it even matched the Platinum, I'd go for it. For someone who flies AA a few times annually the Admirals Club membership isn't worth it; indeed, I could buy access as needed and still realize a net savings accounting for the higher card fee. Obviously, the calculation may differ for a more frequent flyer, and the 10x on hotels vs the 8x on my CSR is worth consideration. Still, I think the lower earnings merits at least a mention.
If you get the card it's probably worth booking something through AA Vacations by 9/30 to not only use the $250 credit but also to utilize the maximizemiles promo that's currently on where the miles and LP per $ matches your AA status (so no status is 5x while EP is 11x). Can do a flight and car combo if you don't want to book hotel through AA vacations.

Yup, this definitely helps with the value of this card. I plan to use it for overnight layovers giving me the flexibility to drive for food. I don't need a fancy lodging for these types of a stays: la quinta inn, hampton inn, whatever.
The $100 AC credit is nice. If I maximize both, the annual fee is $95, which is well worth it for the AC and AS lounges since I mostly travel on AS and HA.
My initial decision matrix is:
Apply for the card if I travel on American Airlines at least 6-8 times a year and have a definite plan to use the miles/points from the bonus and the 6-8 trips within a year. Otherwise, it can be made to work but requires quite a bit of effort to make it work.
(At the peak of my business travel before the pandemic, it was only about 15 trips per year and not half of them on American, but maybe 3 of them)
Gonna cancel and then reapply next year when I hit my 48 month mark, if there are good SUBs then
