Per this FlyerTalk thread, it appears as if Virgin Atlantic has updated their seating policy page, and will soon begin charging for advance seat assignments: Between 18 December 2013 and 30 January 2014 you will only be able to assign seats for flights departing on or before 01 March 2104. BA do not charge for FF on OW Sapphire and Emerald. If you're OW Ruby you can assign seats 7 days in advance. If you're travelling with infant there's no charge either.

Will Virgin allow free assignments for their FF's?

Great for families with kids! I love that stress free environment when you wonder if your toddler will sit next to you or a stranger.

Lucky,

Either I read this wrong or you read it wrong, but from my understanding, if you are on a mileage ticket you can pay to choose a seat but regardless of if you are on a mileage ticket or not, you can't pay the cost of getting a seat assignment with miles.

Lucky - There is no mention about not being able to select a seat on a mileage ticket, rather they are talking about being able to pay with miles or miles + cash for a seat which they will not offer at this point
