Cathay is actually one of only a handful of airlines that actually lists a fuel surcharge. Nearly all the others use the more generic heading of "carrier imposed fees" for YQ/YR, since the amount generally has nothing to do with the price of fuel and more to do with establishing a consistent fare base price on a region-wide basis.

I think the biggest draw with this elimination will be for corporate customers who has a contract with CX. Typically fees/surcharges are excluded from the negotiated discount. This may seem very minor for a few ticket purchases, but for companies who books hundreds or thousands of tickets on CX this savings does add up.

Why does any airline still have fuel charges with oil at historically low prices?

Perhaps it's an incentive to get people to redeem miles for travel with them more (in the future of course).

Fuel surcharges, close-in booking fees, resort fees, mileage redeposits, et al. Hopefully these unscrupulous business practices are COVID casualties.

Why was there a fuel surcharge to begin with?

There's a law in Honk Kong that mandates that fuel surcharges need to be related to the cost of fuel (what a concept!)

Cathay lowered them because they had to (oil atmhistoric lows), not because they wanted to.

Thank you Hong Kong. Other countries should be so honest.
