I can confirm this works on award tickets. It's not 1,000 miles per bag though. I recently checked 3 bags on a SEA-EWR-SEA round trip award ticket and got 1,000 miles credited each way.

@Sabr We left the bags with the same people who would normally tag the bag.

@ K Thanks for the note. I've updated the post to clarify this point. We had one bag per person so we received 1,000 per bag in each of our accounts. You are correct that multiple bags for one individual does not earn 1,000 per bag. Anyone checking a bag in the next couple of weeks should spread checked bags out per person if you have multiple passengers in your party.

Now if the airlines could just not take forever to get the bags from the plane to baggage claim. I don't resent the time it takes to check a bag half as much as the time it takes for them to deliver the bag at the other end.
