Many travel loyalty programs offer the ability to earn lifetime elite status. Ordinarily elite status has to be earned on an annual basis, so it sure is nice to be able to not worry about requalifying for status anymore.

Whether it is annually earned tier status or lifetime tier status, it provides what benefits that a premium cabin ticket does not otherwise provide? Tier status should be an after-thought of the flying you would ordinarily do.
I noticed that mileage tickets on an Alaska and Hawaiian are also counting toward lifetime status this past year. I think it may have been a subtle adjustment when they started counted mileage tickets toward status points.

Three million miles earns what is now called lifetime Titanium.
I have not had an upgrade clear at 120 hours in a loong time. If they do, something invariably comes up and I have to rebook or cancel.
I'm ambivalent about status sharing, as it makes it harder to upgrade. However, there will be a time when one of us (both MM titaniums) stops flying all the time, and we may take advantage of the spousal/member of household status match.
Considering that Alaska is rarely upgrading customers.. they are choosing to sell upgrades until the last minute.. there's no point really to chase status with Alaska. The only time you can get upgraded is when there are a lot of first class seats that haven't been sold.. usually the short legs.
I am a two million miler... But I have to get Titanium Elite status in order to score day of flight upgrades to F/C > 90% of the time. As a Platinum member, it is pretty rare to get an day of flight upgrades. THe best benefit of AS 2 million miler is the priority for day of flight upgrades is top of the list irrespective of fare paid (Main or better)
I also believe that the 2 3-million miler flyers were granted lifetime Titanium status.
