Our focus here at One Mile at a Time is on finding the best ways to leverage rewards and loyalty programs to improve the travel experience, and understanding how to find the best bank credit cards is a huge part of that. With the right credit card, you can get better rewards for the money you’re spending every day anyway, including upgraded flights and luxury hotel stays.

The Best Bank Credit Card Offers of May 2020

Nowadays almost every major bank offers an assortment of great credit cards, which can make it tough to choose between them. Having used cards from a variety of banks and issuers, we feel the best approach is to:

  1. Compare the potential benefits of the card
  2. Check out the rewards structure (and what those rewards can get you!)
  3. Add up the value of any welcome bonuses or other incentives
  4. Then subtract out the cost of any annual fees

If that sounds like a lot, don’t worry — we’ve done all the work for you. Here are the best bank credit cards available today:

Best Bank Credit Cards with Rewards

In general, bank rewards programs will offer two different types of incentives on your purchases: either a proprietary points currency that can be redeemed towards a certain reward (we obviously prefer travel), or as cash-back.

Cash-back cards tend to be the most straightforward, allowing you to get a certain percentage of your purchases back as a statement credit on your next billing statement. In many cases, especially for domestic or economy travel, a cash-back style card can be a great option to help stretch your travel budget.

The bank rewards schemes are further divided into two categories — those that let you redeem directly towards travel (or some other reward), and those that allow you to transfer the accumulated points to a partner program, and thus benefit from their loyalty awards. We like these kinds of points best, as they give you the utmost flexibility in your travel planning.

Regardless of whether you choose to earn cashback, travel rewards, or some other type of rewards currency, we’d encourage you to earn some kind of rebate on all the purchases you’re making every day anyway. As long as you’re responsible with your card use, make payments on time, and don’t incur extra debt through credit cards, the benefits can be tremendous. Here are the best bank credit cards with rewards available today:

Arguably the coolest feature of this new card is Citi will round up your purchase to the nearest 10 ThankYou points. Make a $1 purchase? You’ll earn 10 ThankYou points. Make an $11 purchase? The way I view it, this is a card that’s worth holding onto for the anniversary free night certificate, valid at a hotel that retails for up to 35,000 Marriott points per night. That benefit alone should more than justify the annual fee.

The most rewarding credit card for your situation will likely evolve over time. A good starting point is to think about whether you’re most interested in earning a percentage of your purchases as a statement credit (in which case a cashback card may be ideal), or if you’re hoping to accumulate points over time for a greater travel reward. We personally find the latter to offer the best value for the money, but there are definitely situations where cash back can make more sense!
