Breeze Airways Crew Calls Cops On Snack Thief, Triggering “Security Breach”

The police were called to meet a Breeze Airways flight upon landing, and all passengers had to stay seated while someone was taken off the plane. The crime? Well, stealing something from the snack cart…

Airline snack cart swipe has consequences… sort of

News 12 New York has the story of how a passenger was detained by police after a disturbance that happened on a Breeze Airways flight on the night of Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Specifically, this happened on flight MX581, from White Plains, New York (HPN), to Vero Beach, Florida (VRB), operated by an Airbus A220.

After landing, the captain reportedly instructed all passengers to remain seated, and told them that there had been a security issue during the flight. Police then boarded the aircraft and removed a man from his seat.

The Vero Beach Police Department later stated that the incident was not considered a security breach. An investigation determined that the passenger took an item from the snack cart, after being told he wasn’t allowed to do so. The passenger later paid for the item, according to the police.

While the passenger was detained and questioned, no arrests were made, and no charges were filed. The passenger was, however, issued a trespass warning from the airport.

A snack thief was removed from a Breeze flight

Theft is of course wrong, but was this an overkill?

The exact sequence of events surrounding this incident aren’t known. Breeze has a selection of buy on board food and drinks, so did the passenger just try to take a snack off the cart without paying, and pretend it didn’t happen? Or was he specifically told not to take it, and he did it anyway?

Either way, theft is theft, and I can understand why stuff like this needs to be reported. For that matter, not following crew member instructions is a violation of Federal Aviation Regulations. Then again, in terms of deescalation and overall customer experience, one certainly wonders if the response was warranted? I’m curious which item from the menu was stolen — did this all happen over a $5 bag of M&M’s, or the $6 veggie ramen noodles?

What I find odd here is that the crew reportedly referred to this as a security breach, but then this all ended with the man simply paying for the snack, and not having charges filed against him. If he committed theft and violated Federal Aviation Regulations, why didn’t the airline end up pressing charges? This can’t have possibly been about just recovering a few dollars.

For that matter, what a strange event for other passengers, when everyone has to stay seated when the plane arrives at the gate so that the snack burglar can be taken off.

Bottom line

A Breeze Airways flight had a rather dramatic ending, after the police were called for a “security breach.” In reality, what happened is that a passenger took something from the snack cart without paying, after he was told he wasn’t allowed to do so.

Theft is theft, and not following crew member instructions also isn’t allowed. But it’s interesting that this incident ended with the passenger simply paying for the snack, with no further charges being filed.

What do you make of this Breeze Airways snack situation?

The Breeze crew should be prosecuted for reporting a non existent security breach. They knowingly lied to the police.

The security issue was actually the cops boarding the plane. Never know how they might act

The cops or pax ? ... lol

Ludicrous news , especially if the passenger thought the snacks are complementary , as they usually are . Airline owes the accused passenger an apology . Pilot ought to have told the aggrieved crew member that pilot has more important things to do .

I won't dignify your poorly thought-out, moronic, deranged and imbecilic rant which makes me remind me of you as a spoiled brat without a properly functioning brain! It all collapses under one iota of critical thinking and an even miniscule degree of common sense. Let me dissect it for you, Snacks are never complimentary on Breeze, the THIEF owes the airline, the airport, the police, the many wonderful passengers who bore witness to such confusion...

Let me dissect it for you, Snacks are never complimentary on Breeze, the THIEF owes the airline, the airport, the police, the many wonderful passengers who bore witness to such confusion and delay, and certainpy as well to anybody who has respect for and a remote understanding of the law, and just so you know, the pilots do not dictate criminal matters pertaining to theft to the cabin crew, who have a ethical, moral and operational duty to report criminality. Imagine if once skyward that the criminal escalated his actions? It's a simple matter of safety and security of the flight!

There's nothing in the FAR's that addresses theft (there are FAR provisions on complying with some types of instructions, but not instructions unrelated to those provisions).

Instead, theft would fall under state criminal laws (e.g. Florida Statutes Chapter 812).

Best news I've seen all year! It's about time that CRIME is taken seriously and CRIMINALS handled promptly again. This is not a COMMUNISM country. Laws will be had and likewise followed. If you steal something you should go down fast and hard, crying all the way! This was a great lesson for all the wonderful children who bore witness as they know all realize that "Crime doesn't pay". Kudos to the Airport, Airline and Police!

Nobody was charged with any crime here Karen so it's not quite the LAW AND ORDER! you are clamoring for.
And I agree we should hold criminals accountable, starting from the top.

This is what got the Hamburgler banned from Delta. Not a single first class Shake Shack remained.

How is this person issued a "tresspass warning" for the airport. He has a ticket for a flight from point a to point b.

    1. Uncle Coffee Guest

Do you have any idea how property rights work? The airport is owned by the airport authority/operator. The authority that they have far supercedes that of any airline.... of the airport doesn't want to see a given person on their property, they are good as gone... no different than you in a building you own. I would be embarrassed if this were my comment.... THINK.

I probably would have paid for the snack myself, to avoid the kerfuffle.

The airline owes the passenger an apology . I thought the snack and soda cart was usually for the passengers ? Myself , I find the complementary snacks and sodas unhealthy and never eat them . What if a snack or soda was spoiled and made the passengers sick ? The passenger might have mistakenly thought the snack or soda was complementary , as they usually are . The airline owes the passenger an apology .

The snacks and sodas are not usually complimentary on Breeze, and he most certainly knew it. And, while I fly airlines with complimentary snacks and sodas, I don't take them from the cart.

    8. 1990 Guest

"while I fly airlines with complimentary snacks and sodas" ... we know... Ohio to Europe and Australia, Delta One... you lucky duck.

From what I understand anyone that exhibits any kind of intolerable behavior inflight is a security risk. I would assume that would include stealing BOB food and drink items.

That may be excessive but then consider the number of airport and airplane YT meltdown videos and you realize the real threat to air travel isn't from "terrorists." It's from unhinged, self entitled toddler state adults. Usually drunk and pilled up.

    "with no further charges"

    Nice pun.

Anyway, it was a waste of resources. That could've been handled like mature adults.

    1. Alert Guest

Best to never accept any complementary airplane snack . You never know who breathed on it , or touched it . Popcorn , for example .

If you’re mortified that the sealed 90 calorie bag of pretzels might have been coughed on at some point, best to stay home.
