Grand Hyatt Singapore Reopens Gradually After Renovation

Grand Hyatt Singapore Reopens Gradually After Renovation

28

In September 2022, we saw the Grand Hyatt Singapore close, as the hotel has been undergoing a full renovation. This doesn’t just represent some minor cosmetic refresh, but rather a full reimagining of the property.

There’s now a positive update for Hyatt loyalists who are interested in staying at this hotel, as the property has just reopened ahead of schedule. The catch is that the reopening is occurring progressively, so not all rooms and amenities are immediately available.

Basics of the renovated Grand Hyatt Singapore

The refreshed Grand Hyatt Singapore has once again started to welcome guests as of July 10, 2024. It won’t be until some point in 2025 when all room types and public facilities fully reopen. The property initially opened over 50 years ago, in 1971, so it has quite a history. It’s located off Singapore’s Orchard Road, famous for shopping and dining.

The property will eventually have 699 keys, compared to 677 prior to the renovation. Basically everything about the property has been updated, from the guest rooms, to the public areas. Of course if you’re looking for a boutique property, this hotel isn’t for you. However, as far as mega Grand Hyatts go, I’d say this promises to be one of the nicest.

The room product looks great, with entry level rooms starting at 42 square meters (452 square feet). Meanwhile deluxe rooms start at 54 square meters (581 square feet), so are very generously sized.

Interestingly, the standard suites are the same size as the deluxe rooms, but with a different layout, and in a different part of the hotel.

As far as other facilities go, the Grand Hyatt Singapore will have a wellness garden. While the current renderings don’t look terribly realistic, this promises to be pretty cool, if it’s anything like what’s pictured.

As you’d expect in a city like Singapore, the Grand Hyatt will also be a dining destination, with quite the array of food and beverage outlets, ranging from Le Pristine Singapore (from chef Sergio Herman), to Pete’s Place (an Italian restaurant), to StraitsKitchen (a Singaporean restaurant), to Martini Bar (a bar, as the name suggests), and more. However, those haven’t all reopened immediately.

Grand Hyatt Singapore rates & points requirements

Now that the Grand Hyatt Singapore has reopened, what are cash rates and points requirements like?

For those redeeming points, this is a Category 6 World of Hyatt property, meaning a free night redemption in a standard room will cost 21,000-29,000 points per night. Meanwhile a free night redemption in a standard suite will cost 36,000-44,000 points per night.

Up until a few weeks ago, this was showing as a Category 5 property. So it seems that the decision was made to increase the category, in light of all the work that has been done. That sure is a steep category for such a big hotel.

Grand Hyatt Singapore points rates

As far as cash rates go, they currently start at around 425 SGD (~315 USD) per night.

Bottom line

After a closure of nearly two years, the Grand Hyatt Singapore has reopened as of July 2024. Having stayed at the “old” Grand Hyatt, the renovated property looks like a huge improvement, and I look forward to checking this out. However, I’ll wait until the entire project is complete at some point in 2025 before staying here.

Anyone plan to stay at the Grand Hyatt Singapore now that it has reopened?

Of course, the question that most Singaporean expats want answering is: when is BRIX reopening?

    1. Charley Guest

Already open lah - 'soft opening' last week

One of the better Grand Hyatt properties in the world, so I’m glad to see they made the investment to keep it competitive. On the flip side, the SF Grand Hyatt should also be renovated or downgraded.

I used to stay frequently at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. Despite it being a big hotel, the service was excellent. As a globalist I was always upgraded to a suite. The Grand Club wasn’t quite as good as HK but way better than anything in the US. I will definitely check it out if I get to Singapore.

Will the bar downstairs still be filled with prostitutes? That's the important questions we should be asking.

I looked at the Grand Hyatt yesterday and the Hyatt site showed it as a Category 5 property with rooms for the nights I'm interested in at 23,000 points per night.

Just an FYI. We'll stay at the Andaz, as the booking is already in place.

      Here's an interesting comparison...

Hilton Orchard Singapore, which is a 5-min walk from this Grand Hyatt, is at about same level (or "category") as the GH, though the Hilton may be slightly "better" (BAR - Hilton: SG$425; GH: SG$405).

However, the costs of standard award seem to be higher at the GH than at Hilton Orchard, where they have been at 65K HH points/night for a while now.

-- A WoH standard award costing 23K points per night would be equivalent to a HH award costing 69K points per night, and would be similar to the actual Hilton Orchard standard award cost of 65K/night.

-- A WoH standard award costing 29K points per night would be equivalent to a HH award costing 89K points per night, and would be much higher than the actual Hilton Orchard standard award cost of 65K/night.

I just searched for standard awards for this coming September at the GH and they cost 25K WoH points/night, which would be equivalent to 75K HH points per night, and would still be higher than the actual Hilton Orchard standard award cost of 65K/night.

The "fair market price" of a standard award at the GH S'pore should be the original value of 23K WoH points/night and as a Cat 5 hotel...

I think it would be smart on the part of the hotel management. It may be that they can sell the deluxe rooms to those who are willing to pay for it, elite member or non-elite member. Yet, for Hyatt Globalists with their complimentary upgrades or those who use upgrade certificates or point redemptions, the hotel does not need to compromise on size for those ‘free’ (in their viewpoint probably) rooms. They probably made those suite rooms nicer and put it in a different part of the hotel to make those who stay in those rooms feel like it was worth it.

Yeah yeah yeah very interesting……..what about Brix? That will be of most interest to your readership (if not half of S’pore)

  8. David S Guest

Yeah @DCS, Brix was something else. The girls were very “friendly.”

    1. DCS Diamond

(Big grin) - Yup, maybe "too friendly" ;-)

  9. DCS Diamond

What? No word about "Brix", one of the hotter and trendier nightclubs in S'pore? My bet is that they bring "Brix" back because it was a magnet that attracted quite a bit of business to the hotel...

The "old" GH S'pore was indeed quite "dated", but I should not complain because something else, in addition to "Brix", that made my stay there in 2015 memorable was that I scored a complimentary suite upgrade as lowly HGP Platinum :-)

Boutique is just a fancy word to overcharge by $50.

I hope they keep the fact that you can have visitors come up to the room without card key or registration at the front desk.
That was the benefit at the GH Singapore that came ahead of the other places.

    1. Mike Guest

JPLat - can you please explain?
Also - if I had to guess, that will no longer be the case. I am pretty confident the elevators will be key operated.

    2. Andrew Diamond

Mike - many people would order a type of "Grab" to enjoy in their rooms. ;-)

  12. Manny Guest

So which hotel would have a better location, the Andaz Singapore or the Grand Hyatt Singapore ?

    1. Likes-to-fly Gold

I would say Andaz (convenient MRT, nicer area), but this is up to personal preference.

    2. Baliken Guest

For a tourist, the intersection of Orchard and Scotts roads, next to the Orchard MRT, and close to Ion, Ngee Ann City and Paragon, can’t really be beat. I vote for the GH’s location over the Andaz’s.

    3. Pete Guest

If you're a leisure traveler I'd say it depends what you're after - if you seek the Singapore luxury shopping and dining experience, then the GH is the place to be. If you're more interested in proximity to cultural and business attractions, then go for the Andaz. Either way they're only 4 km/2.5 miles apart, so it's not that big a deal.

    4. Many Guest

Its a 1-1 tie. Anyone want to break the tie.

  13. Andrew Diamond

I enjoyed their Grand Club - I hope they plan to reopen it, as the staff was really exceptional. I'm a little concerned about the densification of rooms, although I don't think the old bi-level suites were entirely essential (or useful since the first floor and second floor had zero sound isolation.)

    1. Frank B Gold

They are booking club rooms in August so I would say that's part of the plan.

  14. Euro Gold

That would explain why I was not able to book anything at the hotel in the previous months. For the dates I will be in Singapore, the value in terms of cpm is only average (20K points or 490 SGD) so I'll keep my current itin as is. Also grabbed a night at the Andaz before the redemption rates went up, would love to hear your thoughts on both properties when you make it to Singapore next.

Lucky, just a small correction, although the nearest MRT station is indeed Orchard Road station, the Grand Hyatt Singapore is actually located on Scotts Road.

  16. David Diamond

Looks interesting, will be in Singapore during opening week so will drop in and check it out (without staying).
