Seized Drugs Stolen From Brussels Airport Warehouse

4

Customs officials seize all kinds of things from travelers at airports, from illegal drugs, to goods imported above the legal limit. Well, here’s an interesting twist on that — it seems that customs officers just had some of their seized items seized. 😉

Thieves steal massive amounts of drugs & cigarettes

Late last week, thieves had quite the haul at a Brussels Airport warehouse, which is where customs officials ordinarily store items that were seized from travelers. This happened at the Brucargo building at Zaventem Airport (BRU).

According to the Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office and the finance ministry, the thieves made off with 29 kilograms of cannabis, 75 kilograms of levamisole (used for cocaine), 1,400 kilograms of water pipe tobacco, and 269,000 cigarettes.

The building where the theft took place is supposed to be locked, and is only accessible with an airport badge. It’s now being investigated how unauthorized people managed to gain access to the facility. It’s not clear whether there was forced entry, or whether they were somehow let in. The perpetrators haven’t been caught.

Amazingly enough, this isn’t even the first time that something like this happened. A similar theft occurred last year. Apparently there were plans to install more security cameras in the facility following that incident, yet somehow it still hasn’t happened. This inspiring quote from George Bush comes to mind…

This reminds me of the Brussels Airport diamond heist

While this warehouse robbery is of course significant (especially since you’d think seized drugs would be secured), it pales in comparison to the 2013 Brussels Airport diamond heist, which has to be one of the wildest airport robberies we’ve seen in history.

In that incident, eight masked gunmen in two cars with police markings broke through the barrier fence of an airport, and drove to a Helvetic Airways Fokker 100 that was departing for Zurich.

Just as the Brink’s armored van pulled up to the plane with $50 million in diamonds, the robbers held the flight at gunpoint, stole the jewels, and drove off. A burning car was later found in the city, which was also one of the cars used in the operation.

While the robbers initially got away, 31 people were arrested in connection with this. That’s a story straight out of a movie, and then some.

Bottom line

Brussels Airport had quite the theft late last week, as a warehouse used to store items seized by customs officials was broken into. This isn’t even the first time that this has happened, as a similar incident occurred last year. Despite that, new cameras still haven’t been installed.

What do you make of this Brussels Airport warehouse robbery?
