Awful: Ritz-Carlton Maldives Butler Accused Of Raping Guest

There’s a story going viral on Twitter about a woman who claims she was raped by one of the butlers at the Ritz-Carlton Maldives, as flagged by View from the Wing. My gosh, the details here are just terrible.

Solo female traveler claims she was raped at Ritz-Carlton Maldives

A solo female traveler (a Chinese national studying abroad in Australia) took to Twitter to make some pretty serious allegations against the Ritz-Carlton Maldives. According to this woman’s version of events, here’s what happened after she checked in on June 10, 2023:

  • After checking in, she was assigned a butler, who showed her around the room and familiarized her with the property’s amenities
  • During her stay, she splashed some water on her phone and couldn’t get it to turn on, so she contacted the front desk, and they sent the butler; he let her use his phone with her SIM card, so she could get in touch with her family
  • He then set down on her bed, and asked why she came to the property alone and where she’s from, and also asked if she slept outside the night before, at which point it occurred to her that he might have been watching her
  • He put some chewing gum in his mouth and asked her if she wanted to kiss, to which she responded no; she took her computer and translated it for him, in case he didn’t understand
  • He then reassured her that she could feel comfortable with him and that having sex is okay; he leaned toward her, and he forced open her mouth, and when she resisted he asked her if she was lesbian because she didn’t want to do anything with him
  • He then forced his tongue into her mouth but promised to be a gentleman, pushed her on the bed, removed his pants, and then put his private parts in her mouth twice, touched her private parts, and tried to have intercourse with her
  • She tried to get him to stop, but he wouldn’t; she eventually managed to wrap herself in a quilt, but he still asked if he could touch her breasts
  • He then “released” himself on her computer screen; he took a towel and wiped off the computer screen, and then told her he’d be back later, because she needed time to open up

How the Ritz-Carlton Maldives has responded

Following this incident, the woman immediately informed the property of what happened. Here’s what she claims happened:

  • Managers came to her room and tried to make it look like nothing happened, so she requested the police
  • Two staff came to her room to take her computer and the towel, and she reminded them that this should only go to the police
  • They then took samples from her mouth, told her that it would take a week to get the results, and that there was no reason to arrest the butler yet
  • She also did a medical examination, given that she had bruises all over her body
  • She was then asked to leave the hotel ASAP, and that this matter was between the police and butler, and had nothing to do with the hotel
  • The hotel told her she did this to get a free stay; she says she paid the full amount to the hotel, and that her family is “well reputed and rich”

The hotel was radio silent for some time, but finally posted to social media, stating the following:

We take such allegations seriously and this matter is currently with the police. The safety and well-being of our guests and associates are of the utmost importance. We continue to cooperate with the authorities, and are in regular communication with the guest.

She refutes these claims, stating that she has had no communication or apology from the resort since the incident.

This story is just terrible

My gosh, this story is just absolutely awful, and also an important reminder of how you really can’t let your guard down while traveling.

I have no reason to doubt this woman’s story or version of events. She immediately tried to get the hotel to contact authorities, she submitted evidence, etc.

It’s of course important to acknowledge that we only have one side of the story. I mention this because she names the butler and even posts his picture, and he should have the right to a fair trial (I mean, as much as that’s a thing in the Maldives).

I think one other important lesson here is that we often assume that we’re safe when staying at an international chain hotel, and we let our guard down. Unfortunately there are some bad actors out there, even at these hotels, and you should always have your guard up. That’s especially true for solo female travelers, who are most likely to be targeted.

This concern isn’t just true at chain hotels, but also when in foreign countries, where you can’t really trust authorities to act the same way they may at home. The Maldives is heavily reliant on tourism, so it goes without saying that the government has a strong incentive to downplay anything that paints the country as less than a perfect place to visit. Similarly, the hotel has a strong incentive to downplay this, since this is terrible PR.

Even if the hotel tries to downplay this, I hope that Marriott makes it a point to take this seriously. This is getting a huge amount of publicity, and Marriott would look a lot better if it showed that guest safety was a priority, and that this is handled the way it should be. I’m not holding my breath, though…

Bottom line

A solo female traveler staying at the Ritz-Carlton Maldives claims she was raped by one of the butlers. She detailed the allegations, submitted a police report, handed over the evidence, and was swabbed. The hotel reportedly told her she was just trying to get a free stay, and hasn’t been in contact with her since the stay.

While I certainly hope that a thorough and fair investigation is performed, I do have some concerns there. I’m curious to see how this situation evolves, and feel terribly for the guest.

What do you make of this Ritz-Carlton Maldives rape story?

Surprising one of my friends from China went over and had some money missing from her purse also. We had no concrete proof but who knows I might have dropped it .Too bad the place is nice and new . I would suggest putting valuables and money in the lock box for sure.

To me that is really difficult to believe at a property of this caliber. Do I believe a butler could sexually assault someone? Sure. However, for someone at a management level to say such a thing to a paying customer who is making these allegations? That doesn't sound true at all, which calls into question what else may not be true or have been exaggerated. There may very well be much more to this story because we are only being told one side from someone who has an incentive to make the hotel look as bad as possible.

You do know this is a Muslim country right?

Its a disturbing week. "we often assume that we’re safe when staying at an international chain hotel, and we let our guard down" whilst Hyatt's GM tries to downplay killing guests with carbon monoxide and Ritz management tries to downplay rape. What else do we not know about?

Obviously ritz carton and the authorities are covering up the case, this woman can afford to stay in expensive resort and she’s attending an established university, no logical for her to destruct herself to this extent. Ritz carton make a big mistake to coverup for this accused‘s criminal act and damage the reputation.

Consider all the weird stuff people do on YouTube, TikTok, and other social media, logic is all there.

A YouTuber faked a plane crash. That person can afford a plane and represented Team USA for the Winter Olympics, no logical for him to destruct herself to this extent.

Ritz also have no reason to cover up if they know they are holding a smoking gun.

I hope everyone concerned is afforded a fair and thorough investigation.

I won't stay at this property for sure in the future especially the authorities and the hotel downplay this incident. I'm not surprised at all this happened. When I travelled to Maldives last year, I was told by staff employees they can't go home for a few months once they work at the resort. Most their colleagues are male. Interact with a female would be hotel guests.

She is definitely a scam, looking for a pay day. I wouldn’t pass it as a politically motivated scandal to destabilise the entire country for the upcoming election. Also, can anyone ask her to show the credit card charge slip that she used to pay the Ritz Carlton for the accommodation?

I love how strategically she tweets “June 2023” because she said different dates to different media. She forgot the date but she remembers...

I can't speak specific for this property's policy.
But I can assure you I've set foot in so many rooms without paying anything first. I'm only charged at check out.

You obviously must have never used a hotel before.
Also 'generalmy' (sic) speaking, most women aren't ambitious enough but maybe this one is.

Sure buddy, they never take your credit card when you check in? Besides the most sleazy one star hotels, they all take your credit card or you don't get a room, period. Your credibility is surly lacking.

    4. Jonathan Guest

All hotels in islands like the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritus and even Zanzibar require guests to pay the reservation in FULL at booking, and charge for incidentals such as spa services, meals, etc at check out. I have been to the Maldives thrice and stayed at this very Ritz Carlton, and can assure you she paid for her stay in full prior to checking in.

She blames the Ritz Carlton for covering it up. I can see how the butler and how the hotel could be held responsible but for Ritz Carlton to be responsible depends if it is independently managed or frachised, etc

  10. Michael Guest

The Ritz Carlton social media account as well as that of the Maldives resort are also deleting comments urging them to address this incident. Beyond belief the lack of accountability.

Ritz responded to daily Mail saying this is with the police now but didn’t explain how they treated the victim. Did they made any arrangements for her to keep her safe and have a place to stay while waiting? It seems every one in the island want her to leave. Ritz shame continues on you

  15. Anabel Guest

This is such a horrifying expression! I feel so bad for the victim and hope she finds justice and peace soon. Instead of investigating and apologizing, whoever from the hotel accused her to fake reporting is just so insulting. That would have to be a whole dramatic act to just get a free night.

Men from the subcontinent are extremely thirsty for light-skinned Asian women. Case closed, you're welcome.

there is plenty of evidence to convict the assailant without resorting to racism. the accused is a person, not a subcontinent. right now is a good time to remind us all that rape is not exclusively about sexual "thirst" it is about power abuse and dehumanization.

Yes cause Caucasian rapists in the west just do not exist. All accused of rape outside elsewhere are from the subcontinent in disguise. What an idiot.

By keeping the male’s identity hidden until such time as he may be convicted, then there’s protection. Assuming there’s “two sides to every story” is such a slap in the face to every woman and in fact every man that has ever been raped!

      I can say with 100% certainly ...

okay, we all know the only 100% certain things on earth are death and taxes, so which is it going to be?

... this man is too gentle

      is that death or taxes?

The stakes are too high, and I can tell you that knowing him personally, he would NEVER do such an act

how do you think monica lewinsky would respond to your comment that "the stakes are too high" - or DSK (French guy) who was acquitted in court but admitted verbally in the press that he engaged in inappropriate sex acts? DSK was to be French president and lost that. how is that for high stakes?

countless mass murderers and other serious criminals "would NEVER do such an act" according to people who knew the criminals far more intimately and in a more personal capacity than you knew your butler.

I can provide personal pictures and dates of my stay.

great. who gives a f**? irrelevant unless your pictures were of your butler's nether regions and show unequivocally that he is 100% castrated and was incapable of penetrating. now what are the chances you have such pics? guess what? it's the same as the chance a rape accusation is false!

you claim unusually strong capabilities to predict the behavior of human beings in new situations. if you really had this capability (which you don't because no human being or even AI system does) then you would ... ah forget it. you do not have this capability do you understand? learn some humility and self awareness, learn to stop blaming the victim! educate yourself on the metoo movement from sources that are not Andrew Tate.

awful lot of rape apologist comments

let me tell you all a fact:

there is virtually no such thing as a false rape accusation, it's so vanishingly rare it is not with the realm of reasonable discussion in a situation like this. You don't "both sides" or "innocent until proven guilty" this type of situation outside the courts - and the court system DOES NOT provide justice for the vast majority of rape victims.

    1. Samo Guest

People have cut their hands for insurance fraud. Of course there are false rape accusations (some of them proven to be false, including several high profile cases) - and there would be far more of them if such accusation would be sufficient to ruin someone's life.

Does it seem likely in this case? No, there's no obvious motive. But your premise is incredibly wrong.

No studies have been recently conducted that quantify an increase or decrease in false rape accusations. Furthermore, it’s very difficult to quantify, as without an abundance of physical evidence, it’s impossible to determine if any event, including a rape, has occurred (or not).

All of the comments I'm seeing on here are ridiculous. @ Dt123 Allegedly his semen was spewed on her computer and wiped with a towel. If this is indeed true, then case closed. Unless the evidence was destroyed or not given to the proper authorities. Last I read, the perpetrator's passport was confiscated by Maldivian authorities so he cannot leave.

  23. Regis Guest

Innocent until proven gulty. No judgement or taking anybody's side until an impartial judge reviews the case and adjucates this claim. Rapes happen but so do false allegations, particularly in our attention seeking and publicity driven social media world.

I find it odd that a rape victim woukd report such an awful experience on Twitter? Seems too personal and horrific of an event to share on Twitter….especially so soon after happening. What’s the expectation of doing so? Let the authorities help you. I also am curious about the urgency to contact home so soon after arrival. dude,
      1. She posted on Twitter cuz the hotel tried to slide this under the carpet as documented. The local authorities weren't helping her. Do you read?? She was effin raped...how much later is she supposed to wait to disclose this?! I would have screamed to the world the second this happened to me. Why should the victim be ashamed?! She should be proud for voicing herself. All victims should do so!

      2. Urgency to contact home? Do you not have a family?! Not only it's normal, it's also a very Chinese cultural behavior. We stay in touch with families every fucking hour. I need to update my mom at every layover! This makes her more legitimate.

      3. Wtf her phone is broken.. of course I would contact my hotel for help too in the first minute. The butler offered his phone to her out of his "kindness" she didn't borrow it.

The point is... why would a girl bruise herself and implore the world and the consulate with her naked photos just to get a free hotel stay you misogynistic pig!

    4. goldman sachs Guest

false allegations of rape are vanishingly rare. they're not in the realm of reasonable discussion. your lack of trust in the accuser is ignorant, offensive, and uneducated and it shows you to be low class.

    5. Tom Guest

“ it shows you to be low class” - unlike randomly insulting people using the anonymity of the internet, you mean?

    6. JHH Guest

Apparently the victim only booked 1 night at this hotel. Agreed we should wait for more evidence to surface before jumping to conclusions...

My gut instinct is to believe her side. The last thing any traveler wants, solo or otherwise, is police trouble in a foreign country. Hotel security has improved immensely in recent years but it still ultimately comes down to staff in the end. As a solo business traveler, I’m vigilant. There are plenty of countries I will not travel to alone.

    1. Eskimo Guest

My gut instinct is people do crazy stuff for crazy reasons.

Too many plot holes from both sides to paint a clear picture.

    2. goldman sachs Guest

Eskimo lose the trolling please on this type of topic. your gut instinct is completely immaterial here. there are no plot holes.

The lady claims that the butler seemed to be watching her because he asked her if she slept outside by the room pool the previous night.
However, this incident happened the first day she arrived at the resort.
The timeline does not make sense.

    1. Somedude Guest

My understanding is that she arrived on June 10 (maybe a morning/afternoon flight) and the incident happened on June 11.

    2. goldman sachs Guest

this kind of grasping at straws is straight up rape apologist behavior.

you have obviously misunderstood the timeline due to a language barrier and more importantly an empathy barrier.

if you really want to get all pedantic and technical, you sleep on the first night of a hotel stay, which makes the next calendar day the first practical day.

Some countries really do not get the concept of the solo traveler. As a solo male traveler, I have been in uncomfortable situations in places like Bali and the Maldives, in short layovers ahead of diving trips. In Bali, the butler attending to my room at the St. Regis constantly kept asking why I was alone, if I was married, etc. Similar unnecessary questions happened at the dining outlets, spa, etc. I also had some...

I can only imagine how worse it can be towards a solo female traveler.

    1. Richmond_Surrey Guest

I never had issues traveling solo (female), not even in Maldives. Maybe my hotel was cheap enough, so no butler or other personal services.

No one ever tried to get close to me or ask me any questions. I guess, locals in Tunisia were watching women on a beach, but that's it.

I'm going on another solo road trip through Europe tomorrow and don't expect any troubles. And yes, I will be driving at night, as usual.

    2. Eddie Guest

What hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it's not happening to others. Please at least try to be sympathetic. No one deserves to go through this.

    3. goldman sachs Guest

yeah Richmond_Surrey we don't doubt your experience now could you please read the room and not post something that comes off as invalidating a victim's experience

if I may be very blunt you are probably f***ng ugly

    4. BradStPete Diamond

Interesting. I have also encountered this as a solo male traveler and thought it was "just me". Yes, it is uncomfortable.

  27. Lee Guest

We don't need to rely on the credibility of either person. Validating the story rests on a simple question: Is the guy's DNA on her computer? Even if "wiped off," there is trace DNA.

  28. Ks Guest

This reminds of another blog review from a solo female traveler to a Marriott property in the Maldives a few years ago. Not a butler, but a housekeeper made her uncomfortable with some romantic gestures. It didn’t go further than a gesture, but I could see how it could spiral into what happened in this article.

  29. Dave Guest

Before judging: this is only half the story. Looking at the destination (Muslim) and her Twitter profile photo (quite revealing), the story from the other side may be opposite. I don't know the whole story, we don't know the full story.

    1. TravelinWilly Diamond

“…and her Twitter profile photo (quite revealing)…”

Disgusting. You *are* implying that sexual assault is her fault. Her photo has literally nothing to do with this. Fix yourself.

    2. Dave Guest

No, thats not what i imply. I imply that people judge before knowing the full story.

    3. David Diamond

You sound like a certain ex-President. "I'm not gonna say she's making this up, but she's making this up. Look at that Twitter profile! Can you imagine if she was a sl*t? Can you imagine if she was just a scammer? I'm not saying she was, but can you imagine?"

Straight out of his playbook, and it doesn't hide who you are; we all know.

    4. Antonio Guest

And here we can see how the Neanderthal man learnt to use a laptop. Please admire! Girl is less victim because is revealing . Its the the thing all women drean to do: go to a 3000 usd MV resort to acuse of rape a 20 hour a day working Malay.. you can get bonus Marriott points for additional cxxshots!!!

    5. reddargon Diamond

True, you don't know the full story but I guess that didn't stop you from insinuating that her "quite revealing" Twitter profile photo has some relevance. Very classy.

    6. Somedude Guest

Nice of you to blame the victim "her Twitter profile photo (quite revealing)". Typical.

    7. MaroonOtter Member

This comment is absurd. Blaming the victim… and what does Muslim has to do with any of this? Are you implying that Muslims don’t understand how consent works?

    8. Naba Guest

But it's not right to comment on her profile picture now. She was raped and there are many proves of it. Do you think a girl will be happy to declare that she was raaped? Of course not. This is a big issue. The hotel should take the responsibility too

    9. Guest Guest

Very absurd comment blaming the victim.

  30. Jay Guest

Wow and to think we nearly stayed here. After this kind of response (apparently) - i'm hesitant to ever consider this resort.

Will wait for more reports though, but this is an absolute disgrace if this is truly how the hotel handled it.

Obviously not even close to the same thing, but my wife was accosted by the islands Dr. after she had gone to see him while we were in the Maldives in 2018.

The hotel, I'd say, took it semi-seriously as the Dr. was removed from the island immediately (whether to protect him or guests is another story).

    This story is just horrible.

  32. Ray Guest

Checked the Twitter thread that she did. She has contacted the Chinese Embassy, who has assisted her with contacting the police, and asked the police to take the rape of a Chinese tourist seriously. I hope the case is resolved, but the Chinese Embassy may need to apply more pressure (quietly or otherwise) to the authorities. Imagine the CGTN/CCTV headlines at home: "female student staying at American hotel chain assaulted by employee in Maldives".

Ritz and its management is behaved very shameless. They accused her of making up and kicked her out of the hotel while waiting the test results, they might even destroyed evidence by taking them from the girl before police

f*** I am deeply ashamed to share the same gender as "Jeff". i can accept that this man was your butler, and you were satisfied with the service he delivered to you. you have no capability to judge what he is capable of. in a twisted sense, the very fact that you said he "wouldn't hurt a flea" adds credibility to the accuser because so many CONVICTED criminals of the worst type (rape, murder) have been profiled in media reports with friends and neighbors using those exact same words. now let's pick apart the rest of your comment
Have you taken a look at her wacky twitter account?
a double whammy of cultural ignorance and victim blaming. I almost cannot believe my eyes.
I also chatted with the management at the RC Maldives, and if the same general manager is still there that was there last year, I can tell you, she would take an allegation like this very seriously.
you claim unusually strong capabilities to predict the behavior of human beings in new situations. if you really had this capability (which you don't because no human being or even AI system does) then you would ... ah forget it. you do not have this capability do you understand? learn some humility and self awareness, learn to stop blaming the victim! educate yourself on the metoo movement from sources that are not Andrew Tate.
