Iran Air Faces New Europe Flight Ban

Iran Air Faces New Europe Flight Ban

51

Iran is facing a new round of sanctions from select European countries, and this even impacts Iran’s national airline.

Iran Air to be banned from France, Germany, UK

The United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany, have just imposed a new round of sanctions on Iran, for supplying Russia with ballistic missiles for use in Ukraine. As it impacts aviation, this includes new restrictions on Iranian airlines flying to Europe.

Currently, Iran Air is the only Iranian carrier to fly to the United Kingdom or European Union, so that’s the airline that’s impacted by these changes. Iran Air flies from Tehran (IKA) to several destinations in Europe, including Cologne (CGN), Frankfurt (FRA), Hamburg (HAM), London (LHR), Milan (MXP), Paris (CDG), Rome (FCO), and Vienna (VIE).

For the time being, bilateral air service agreements are being withdrawn for France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, so it’s possible that service to Austria and Italy continues. It remains to be seen exactly when this ban will be implemented. While I can’t find any Iran Air flights currently enroute to the newly banned destinations, there are still flights scheduled in the coming days, with tickets on sale.

This isn’t the first time that Iran Air is facing sanctions from European countries, as similar bans were in place between 2010 and 2016, and again in 2020, for a brief period.

Iran Air will be banned from some European countries

Let’s see if Iran imposes reciprocal flight bans

With Europe increasing sanctions against Iran, I’m curious if a flight ban becomes reciprocal. This could come in a couple of forms:

  • Austrian flies to Tehran from Vienna, while Lufthansa is expected to soon resume flights to Tehran from Frankfurt
  • Even beyond actually flying to Iran, Iran’s airspace is an important air corridor for travel to other points in Asia, and European carriers regularly overfly Iranian airspace

You’d think that Iran would retaliate by blocking its airspace from European carriers, but then again, this is a big money maker for the country, so…

Regardless of how this plays out, suffice it to say that some other airlines stand to benefit from these new sanctions, including Emirates Airline, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, etc. They all serve Tehran, and can transport passengers traveling between Europe and Iran.

Could Iran impose sanctions on European airlines?

Bottom line

Several countries in the West are imposing new sanctions against Iran due to the country providing Russia with missiles. France, Germany, and the UK, are now banning Iran Air from flying to their countries, which will have major implications for the airline, as well as for passengers traveling between the countries.

This is far from the first time that Iran Air has faced such sanctions, so I’m curious to see how long they last this time around, and how it impacts European airlines using Iranian airspace.

What do you make of these Iran Air sanctions?

If Iran Air is to be banned flying to Europe then EL AL of the murderous state of Israel should also be banned.

I know of no country in the world that would do nothing if attacked; both Israel and Ukraine have a RIGHT to self-defense and I totally support their right to do so.
War is ugly; if you’ve ever been in one, you know the drill; sometimes innocent lives are lost, but that’s on the attackers.
Glory to Israel and Ukraine and may they find peace. I’m with them, ALWAYS.

That is why the boycott exists. All Iran and Russia have to do is stop being the aggressor and attacker of another country. But that is too civilized for them - they prefer to play the victim card and foolish people go along.

One always wonder at what year do you start officially own territories and anyone who attacked after said year would be considered the aggressor.

Can Italy, the descendants of the Roman Empire, claim rest of NATO invaded them?
      How about Mongolia?

What about present day Israel, which was part of the Ottomans, can it be reclaimed by Turkey without being an called aggressors?

Land of the free, home of the Cherokee, Navajo, Yakama, etc?

And in all cases, Israel is occupying the Palestinians in a brutal occupation. Plus a genocide in Gaza. There is no other truth.

Israel is the aggressor and occupying the Palestinians. They are the ones playing the victim card. The fools like you go along with that.

    Well done.

It is fully time for terrorist Iran to stop them funding international Terrorism.
We stand against terrorists Hamas,Russia and Hezbollah

    1. Indopithecus Guest

By this standard we will soon see all American airlines, British carriers, German airlines, and El Al banned from the rest of the planet. Terrorist is and terrorist does. Western economies are tanking and the Americans and their slave nations are flailing around in their last throes. Pathetic.

You lack the intelligence to see that outside of the US most countries don't see Iran as the devil, you should check the influence of other countries, like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, even Israel in the world, not just their region. They all finance "terrorism", nationalism and religious extremism to a certain degree yet americans overlook this. It's funny, everyone knows the US is in bed with Israel but your lack of nuance is laughable.

Meanwhile the flag carrier of the world’s most genocidal state, El Al, flies to Europe uninterrupted everyday.

Even as they transport foreigners in the other direction to commit war crimes in Gaza.

    1. Samo Guest

Hamas doesn't own any airline so the most genocidal state can't fly to Europe. But don't worry, we're doing what we can to support Israel, including making sure that El Al can operate to Europe safely and provide transportation for their defenders.

    2. Julia Guest

Yeah, Hamas is the one committing a genocide now, not Israel lol

The friends I have in Iran avoid Iran Air (not easy maintaining airframes to a high standard during sanctions) and prefer to fly TK via Istanbul to their final destinations.

    1. Roy Guest

If I'm not mistaken, TK flies to more Iranian cities than the other foreign airlines, which mostly stick to Tehran.

Iran (and perhaps rightfully) is being sanctioned for providing weaponry to Russia for use against Ukraine, while Israel is rewarded for using U.S., German, and British arms to exterminate the Palestinians. These double standards expose a profound decay in the West’s so-called "superiority," where racism, and fascism cloak themselves in the guise of moral virtue. This façade of righteousness is merely a tool of dominance, revealing the hollowness at the core of the values the West claims to uphold. Yuck

Go and enjoy a city break holiday in Tehran and report back. What a fool you are.

    3. Phil_S Member

I pity your ignorance @LadyOlives; a city break holiday in Tehran would certainly be an epic experience. Beyond its rich history, culture, and culinary marvels, the generosity and kindness of the Iranian people surpass anything you could remotely experience anywhere in the West.

    4. Indopithecus Guest

I'd LOVE to go to Iran to see the magnificent archaeology and experience its culture. I'd worry, though, that Israel and its puppets in the West may start bombing the place at any time. Of course, if that happens Israel might have the surprise of its life and so might a few aircraft carriers covering for genocide.

    5. stogieguy7 Diamond

Wow, the self loathing is strong in this one. The west is evil; meanwhile, those who stone gays and slaughter women and children (after raping them) are the heroes. Please get therapy because your concepts of good and evil are totally skewed.

Oh come on, Julia. If you had to choose to destroy either Iran or Israel, you would choose Israel 7 days of the week. I bet your family were members of the SS.

    8. Julia Guest

I'm not German dum dum. So nice try. But Israel did have it's own versions of terrorist groups, like Irgun and Haganah.

And why can't destroying both be an option?

    9. Tim Guest

The implication is that they are each at least as ethical as the other, which is ludicrous on it's own let alone using the comparison points that he did

    10. Phil_S Member

Therapy? Are you referring to the Iranian regime? or you are projecting a zionist mindset? The slaughter of women and children -in their tens of thousands-? the rape of prisoners -to death-? aren't these the hallmarks of the IDF? all on camera and all gleefully posted and celebrated on TikTok and Instagram?

    11. Tim Guest

Sir this is a Tim Horton's

    12. Samo Guest

There are no double standards. We support Israeli and Ukrainian defenders in their fight against Palestianian and Russian aggression. It's a really simple principle.

    13. Julia Guest

      @Samo

Um, Israelis are the ones aggressively occupying the Palestinians, not the other way around.

    14. Adam Guest

I have a genuine question, where are you from in the world? Are you from the west? I'm guessing because Phil isn't a common name elsewhere. How much stupid can one be for falling for Russia's propaganda to destabilize y'all's country by making you focus on the alleged not existence of a genocide in Gaza while ruining y'alls country within and build an alliance with Iran and china. If your so with Iran why don't you move there I dare you.

    15. Julia Guest

"why don't you move" has to be one of the stupidest counter-arguments ever. You can criticize your home in the hopes that you will make it better and live up to the ideals it claims to espouse.

    16. Adam Guest

You're right its so easy to criticize but when it comes to actually doing something yourself other than complaining about others suddenly y'alls support stops their.

    17. Julia Guest

Dude, learn basic spelling and grammar.

Also, I know your view is limited, but people can criticize and do something at the same time. It might too much to comprehend for your feeble mind, but it is possible.

    18. StevieMIA Guest

The ignorance of mostly zionist and Netanyahu apologists, pointing out Iran from doing the same that the US has done forever with many countries in many conflicts. America really is the pits when it comes to critical thinking and nuance. You guys look like the spiderman meme when you play your anti semitism card. Well said Phill!
