Emirates Boeing 777 Stranded In Iran, As Airspace Closes Indefinitely

Emirates Boeing 777 Stranded In Iran, As Airspace Closes Indefinitely

It goes without saying that geopolitical factors can complicate airline operations, and here’s the prime example of that, as flagged by PYOK.

Emirates flight landed in Tehran, then airspace closed

In recent days, we’ve seen a larger than usual amount of unrest in the Middle East, as Iran and Israel exchange missiles. This has caused airspace closures, and that always complicates airline operations in terms of the routes that they can operate.

However, what happened to an Emirates flight is particularly noteworthy. On Friday, June 13, 2025, Emirates operated its typical flight from Dubai (DXB) to Tehran (IKA), with flight number EK977. The flight was operated by a 13-year-old Boeing 777-300ER with the registration code A6-EGE.

The 744-mile flight departed Dubai at 2:27AM, and landed in Tehran at 3:44AM, a little over two hours after departure (there’s a one hour time change between Dubai and Tehran). At this point, Israel started firing missiles toward Iran, so Iran issued a NOTAM, closing its airspace.

Iran’s airspace closed after Emirates’ flight

As a result, Emirates’ return flight to Dubai was canceled. Nearly three days later, the plane is still on the ground in Tehran. While there had been talk of Israel launching an attack against Iran, there was no exact timeline, so airlines like Emirates were caught off guard.

While some airlines have avoided Iran airspace for quite some time, that’s not the case for Emirates, which has used the country’s airspace, and even pretty consistently operated flights there. After all, connecting the region is a large part of what the Dubai-based global carrier does.

This can’t be a good situation for the crew

Emirates crews come from all over the world, and it’s normal for them to fly to destinations in the region that many of us might consider to be “scary,” or at least a bit off the grid. In many situations, they’re just doing direct turns, so they don’t even leave the aircraft.

Presumably these Emirates crews were expecting to just turn right around after working a short night shift, but in this case, the situation obviously got much more complicated. With airspace closed, presumably the crew has been stranded in Tehran, which can’t be ideal.

Officials in Israel and the United States have stated that the conflict with Iran will take “weeks, not days,” so that suggests that getting the jet and the crew out of the country might not be so easy. Hopefully Emirates has another way of getting the crew out of there sooner.

On the plus side, up until now there has been no direct attack or threat on Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport. But still, this has to be quite an uncomfortable situation for all involved, especially with tensions still escalating.

An Emirates Boeing 777 is stranded in Iran

Bottom line

An Emirates Boeing 777 is currently stranded in Iran. On June 13, Emirates operated its typical early morning flight from Dubai to Tehran, though in the short time the plane spent on the ground, Israel fired missiles at Iran, and Iran closed its airspace.

As a result, Emirates canceled its return flight, and on top of that, one would assume that the crew is stuck in the country, with the airspace closed. Most importantly, hopefully the crew is able to get out of Tehran as quickly and safely as possible.

What do you make of this stranded Emirates 777?

I’m more worried about the price of a barrel of oil than a single 777 stuck in Iran.

    1. bossa Guest

No worries, I"m sure Israel will cover the increase for us, especially after they've just bombed a (('nuclear' ??) oil refinery there.... More to come !

  2. ORD_Is_My_Second_Home Diamond

    Looks like Mahan Air's getting a 777.

    1. bossa Guest

LOL ... Deja vu all over again .. (inspired by mother Russia's playbook) ... And the beautiful irony is that Mahan can thank Israel for the 'gift' ! ... But hey, maybe this 'gesture' portends the opening of some sort of reconciliation for the whole region resulting in 'whirled peas on earth' !

    Like Russia striking Ukraine.

Are we to expect sanctions over Israel?
Time to stock up gefilte fish and matzo balls before the embargo?

Or double standard brainwashing hypocrisy strikes again.

    1. AeroB13a Guest

A good grin bro, however, you just might be serious? …. :-)

    2. Samo Guest

Huh? There are no sanctions on Ukraine, so it's not a double standard to not have sanctions on Israel. Duh.

    3. SDRon Guest

There will not be a shortage of gefilte fish as they are found in many offshore areas. The best ones come from around New York in the Long Island Sound. The male of the species is prized for their big matzo balls.

    4. bossa Guest

      It's the latter, I'm sure !

    To quote a friend:
“So an Emirates jet gets stuck in Tehran” sounds like the start to a joke that would get you kicked out of the comedy club these days

    1. bossa Guest

Or maybe even ever so expeditiously 'deported' !

If Wizzair managed to get their planes out of Ukraine, this will have a solution too. As for the crew, I suppose the best option would be some kind of ground transportation?

Just contact the local 'human traffickers' and ask for any special group affinity rates !

I saw a cargo 747 flying over Iranian airspace about 10 hours ago or so on FlightRadar24. It was the only plane in Iranian airspace, and the flight was the #1 tracked flight on FR24 with 12K people following (even more followed than an A320 that had squawked 7700 and was diverting). Can't remember the airline off the top of my head, but I want to say it was a Cargolux jet. The plane was originating in China.

    1. bossa Guest

It subsequently turned off it transponder & landed in Iran with its cargo laden with contraband missiles & weapons .,. lol

    2. JB Guest

Oh. Thanks for that info! I had no idea...

    3. bossa Guest

I was being totally facetious with my comment above, my apologies for the confusion ..

It also looks like there has been a EK 77W stuck on the ground at TLV since May 28th. No idea what’s happening there

  8. George Guest

Nowadays I would be afraid of being stuck in Israel rather than Iran

    1. AceQuik Guest

You couldn’t pay me enough to set foot in either. And not just on safety grounds.

    2. AeroB13a Guest

Ace, both countries offer more culture and history that you can shake a stick at …. lighten up, just think of the adventure experience when it will be safe to travel. I’m on the first decent flight to Terran when we get the green light over the DZ.

Maybe Israel shouldn't make this mess

    1. Paul Guest

Just a small correction, the time difference between UAE and Iran is just 30 minutes, Iran follows GMT +3:30

The way he bends over backwards to avoid telling the truth about Israel is truly a sight to behold.

In the last 1-2days (Flight Radar) we saw Iranian airlines flying their aircraft out of the country to safety. Why couldn't EK also fly their Plane out?

    1. bossa Guest

Gotta squeeze out that last possible dirham versus pax / crew / aircraft safety... Don't worry, the bean counters have it all sorted out !

  12. AlohaDaveKennedy Guest

Where did you find that news - have seen nothing on all the medai channels I watch.

  13. Gray Guest

Sadly for them, Ross Perot is no longer around.

  14. Antwerp Guest

Seems to me that the only solution is to ferry the aircraft out with the crew during daylight hours and providing a communication line to Israel to that effect. Leaving the crew there indefinitely is equally as dangerous but in the ferry situation they at least get the aircraft and personnel out.

    1. Gray Guest

There's another solution - send the crew out via a land border (Emirates flies to both Iraq and Turkey - I wouldn't consider the Pakistani border to be a great option - so they /should/ be able to work something out) and deal with aircraft retrieval later.

    2. Albert Guest

There are ferries from Iran to Dubai:

    3. AeroB13a Guest

One suspects that the aircraft is well and truly lost by now …. think BA194, Kuwait, 1990.

    4. Apple Guest

But that would require driving through Iran right now, surely a much safer option is to drive up north to Chalus and charter a boat to Turkmenistan or Azerbaijan, and then a private jet back

    5. Albert Guest

      @Antwerp
Yes, unlike Wizz in Ukraine, both Israel and Iran want to keep on good terms with Dubai, so one would have thought they could agree a short ceasefire window for EK to get out.

This is terrible! This means that there are eight first class seats out of commission until the airspace opens again!

    1. Nelson Diamond

It is in fact terrible. But I inform you not all EK's have First and so (albeit this one have First), is that more important? If an A/C is shot down it doesnt matter if you're in First or Economy!

    2. bossa Guest

Oh the horror of it all ... I'm sure that' the first thought entering people's minds upon hearing this news ! ... LOL ... How on earth can one cope with that inhumanity ? .... Good one !
