Aeromexico Closes Mexico City Lounges For Renovation

21

There’s both some good and bad news when it comes to the two primary Aeromexico Salon Premier lounges at Mexico City International Airport Benito Juarez (MEX), as flagged by Live and Let’s Fly.

Aeromexico lounges in MEX closed for most of 2025

I’m not sure how I missed this until now, but Aeromexico has closed both of its primary Salon Premier lounges in Mexico City, including the ones intended for domestic and international flights. The lounges closed on February 10, 2025, and are undergoing a renovation

The plan is for the lounges to reopen in December 2025. Admittedly airport construction projects rarely wrap up on-time, so I wouldn’t count on that timeline sticking, and I’d be surprised if the lounges open before 2026. There’s only one picture so far of the new Aeromexico lounge design, and it looks a lot nicer than the old setup. So I’m happy to see the airline investing in its lounge network.

Aeromexico is investing in its lounges

Aeromexico is taking an unconventional approach with its lounge renovations. Typically, airlines will close one lounge at a time, rather than closing both lounges at once. Conventional wisdom is that it’s preferred if it happens that way, so that some lounge capacity is maintained.

However, personally, I appreciate Aeromexico just ripping off the band-aid, and doing it all at once. Rather than a disrupted lounge situation over two years, it’ll just be a disrupted lounge situation over one year. As the airline describes it, “closing both lounges simultaneously allows us to optimize construction efforts and deliver a fully upgraded experience in the shortest possible time.”

Aeromexico has no lounge alternatives for guests

What’s Aeromexico doing for passengers who are eligible for lounge access? Well, nothing…

The airline simply points out that some customers “may have access to other lounges within Terminal 2 through a co-branded card.” Obviously this is less than ideal, though realistically speaking, it’s not like there’s any other lounge that could handle the overflow traffic from Aeromexico’s two lounges, since they’re the busiest at the airport. It simply wouldn’t be possible.

Aeromexico has no lounge alternatives for guests

That being said, it sure seems to me like the airline could do something:

  • Aeromexico could give customers eligible for lounge access a food or drink voucher for some of the airport’s concessions, so that people can at least have something to eat or drink
  • Aeromexico could set up a makeshift concessions area in some quiet part of the terminal or at a gate, so that guests can at least pick up some grab & go food and drinks

So it’s a pretty poor showing on Aeromexico’s part. Personally, I’m at least happy to see the airline is doing both lounges at once, so that we hopefully won’t have to deal with this in 2026 and beyond.

Bottom line

Aeromexico is investing in its two primary lounges at Mexico City Airport. The airline is doing construction work on both lounges at the same time, with the hope of reopening them in December 2025. It’s anyone’s guess if that timeline sticks.

Unfortunately Aeromexico is giving no alternatives to guests eligible for lounge access, other than suggesting accessing lounges through other means.

What do you make of Aeromexico’s lounge situation at Mexico City Airport?

I see BZ the racist commie had to get in his two centavos worth. Then you wonder why people don’t like you.

Terraza premier is open as stated by another commentator. Simple but good service with coffees, drinks and snacks.

Of course, Aeromexico doesn't tell you BEFORE booking a flight. How is this allowed by Sky Team? Even if it's allowed, Aeromexico should be downright embarrassed by this. Especially international business-class passengers.

It is embarrassing, but even more embarrassing would be to continue delaying the renovation of the current absolute shit lounges

      You can never win.
The lounge is terrible, you must renovate it!

We apologise as the lounge is closed for renovations.

It’s terrible, you closed the lounge

      FNT Delta Diamond is angry!

Because he can't imbibe on unlimited airport lounge alcohol at MEX.

I live in MEX and NE, and lived in MEX since 2009. There is no quiet place in MEX Term 2 nor Term 1. There is 1 Amex Centurion in T2, it had minor renovations, but is dark and is generally crowded during peak bank hours. There are 3 Amex Centurion Lounges in T1, but you have to take the Aero Tren to get between the Terminals. T1 is in general is narrow, crowded and...

There are 3 Amex Centurion Lounges in T1, but you have to take the Aero Tren to get between the Terminals. T1 is in general is narrow, crowded and OLD. And it is a LONG Walk to get to the new Centurion Lounge at the end as in 20 min walk.

The root of the issue is that AMLO canceled the new airport, so MEX was never contemplating being open in 2025......thus it is dire need of updates. Now Mexico has 3 airports, 2 old and need renovation and a shiny new one that is Out of the Way for most Chilangos.

i was just there on Sunday, it was a very aggravating experience to arrive at the lounge only to find it closed unexpectedly with no alternatives -- and while i have access to the Centurion lounge and the Priority Pass lounge, both were predictably on massive (1hr+) wait times.

Fun fact: I'm on my to the airport right now. Landing in MEX at around 5 am and have a layover of 7 hours.

How is this a fun fact?

I flew AM business through MEX two weeks ago, Aeromexico still does have a lounge called "Terraza Premier" that's still open to AM J pax and SkyTeam Elite Plus. It's down on the domestic end of departures and is very tiny. Maybe can accommodate 40-50 people total. If I recall correctly, you can also get in with Priority Pass.

Sound about right for an airline in Sky Team, the land of the misfit toys.

I hope when the lounges reopen loud fat American fascists and in particular toxic Delta flyers are banned from this lounge.

Talking about you and your family?

Thats a common wish across the world. :) Even just banning all Americans will do it.

@Tim wishful thinking but let it solely exist in your and BZ’s minds.

Not all. We all know which ones. #greenland isn’t for sale.

@BZ You are like a broken old record player. You already said this when Lucky wrote about Kyoto wanting to levy a huge tax for hotel stays. It is not going to happen no matter how many times you write it.

I'm guessing they're trying to get both updated before next year's World Cup, hence doing both at the same time rather than staggering them.

The food and drink voucher would make sense, though I am trying to imagine where there is a quiet area of MEX T2...
