@James - Anguila, Bermuda, Cayman Islands,St Barth, Turks and Caicos, US Virgin Islands, etc; are not country either. But I - and apparently most of the people here - like to separate them.
What is your take on that Ben?
A total of 22, including three airport-only transits (Iceland, Japan and Greece). Or 23 if you count East and West Germany separately. (I guess that dates me a bit!)
By the way, to compile my list I went to the State Department's list of countries (http://www.state.gov/misc/list/index.htm) and checked off the ones I've been too. Oddly, the Cayman Islands isn't listed.

However, I do not like saying that I "visited" these countries, because while in some of them I have extensively traveled (Chile, Iceland, Portugal, France, Italy, etc), in others I have been to just one city/place (Helsinki, Stockholm, Moscow and St Petersb, etc).
I aldo do not like doing "marathurism" anymore (like people who go to Italy for a week and visit Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, Naples, Siena, Perugia). Last long travel we stayed 16 days only in the South Tuscany/Umbria region and it was amazing. That said, next year I am planing a long trip do Thailand/Cambodia that could be somewhat categorized as a marathurims :)
