This Tuesday a Daallo Airlines Airbus A321 flight from Mogadishu to Djibouti experienced an explosion shortly after takeoff, which injured two and killed one. The person who died was sucked out of the plane by the explosion, and his remains were found in a nearby town. While that’s incredibly sad, the good news is that the plane otherwise landed back in Mogadishu safely, so it seems like it could have ended a lot worse.
They’re still trying to figure out the cause of the explosion, and whether it was linked to terrorism or not. While it might sound obvious to some that it may have been terrorism, there have been similar (and even worse) instances where it wasn’t terrorism, like United flight 811 in 1989.
What’s incredible is this video footage someone took inside the plane following the explosion:
Wow! I’m happy the plane got back on the ground safely — it seems it could have ended a lot worse. Hopefully they figure out the cause soon.
(Tip of the hat to Steve)
This is amazing! Why wasn't this front pages on all the newspapers, lead story for weeks on all the talk shows, or ambassadors/foreign dignitaries tripping over themselves to offer support, condolences, money and signs of solidarity? This is an outrage and as an American I demand....
What ah minute... this didn't happen in Europe. What? Africa?
Okay...sorry...NM...
Ha!! I my speculation was correct! Instant Karma nails a terrorist and spares everyone around him. Priceless.
Lets see, it appears to be an outward explosion, although I am no explosives expert. The plane departed from SOMALIA, and the "explosion" was in the passenger area. I think I know what my bet is on... Thankfully this plane landed safely and most people survived.
Yesterday's news said explosives residue was found. Pure speculation but if that ends up being the truth, the one blown out of the plane is probably the one who set off whatever it was. If that turns out to be it, I'm sorry, I'm going to hell, but LOL.
To me this shows just how safe commercial aviation really is, that the plane could land safely even after something like that.
Any instances of A321s having metal fatigue explosive decompression before?
I wonder if the person who was sucked out was the bomber.
For me, the first thing that came to mind was Aloha Airlines flight 243, an iconic(and extreme) incident where the entire ceiling of the plane came off
@Aaron really? Footage of a place flying with a giant hole in the side of the plane isn't terrifying?
Amazing job by the pilots to get that aircraft on land safe.
Honestly? The footage wasn't that terrifying. I'm sure the experience itself was, but based on that video, all you see is a few people who need oxygen masks. If we hadn't known there was an explosion, it wouldn't have been that special of a video.
Okay...I'll be that guy...people are BLOWN out of the plane when there's a hole in the side due to the pressurized air rushing through its new-found exit as the equilibrium is achieved.
Sorry, everyone. And now back to our regularly-scheduled blogging.
