Pay cash or book with miles?

Pay cash or book with miles?

  1. Luis Diamond

I have a flight booked from LAX to BKK using 90k United miles on the way out with Eva Air and 50k Alaska miles on the way back with CX. I see Xiamen Airlines has fares for $2165 for this route and while they’re not Eva or Cathay quality, seems like Ben thought it was a pleasant enough experience.

So my question is, would you keep the exist award flights or cancel and book with cash on Xiamen? I need 3 tickets so cash will be north of $6k, but would save me a lot of miles for future use.

EVA and Cathay are both fantastic – if you’ve never flown either, there’s value in trying them out. If you have, then Xiamen is a decent enough experience. $2k round trip for biz is pretty good, especially if you charge it to a card that earns a bonus on airfare – 3x on the Chase Sapphire Reserve, and 5x on an Amex Platinum.

You could credit the Xiamen flights to Delta but it only earns 100%
