For the last segment of my quick trip to Versailles, I flew United’s Boeing 737 MAX 8 first class on the 2hr20min flight from Washington (IAD) to Miami (MIA). Believe it or not, this was my first flight on a jet with the new ”United Next” interiors.

Ben, I am a huge fan of United (and fly them a lot), and I was wondering how many miles would it take to upgrade on a flight from Dayton (KDAY) to Washington Dulles (KIAD) in late May? Thank you so much for your time,

How was the legroom/under seat storage? I've found traditionally that there was a trade-off between legroom and seat back entertainment, but I didn't notice that in your pictures.

Looks kind of "meh". United is very much a different airline than it was just a few years ago, but two things keep me from flying them. Newark. The other is the Max. I simply will not fly on that piece of junk.

Magnolia Bakery was a setting in Sex & the City way back and is most famous for excellent red velvet cupcakes. A home run item combined with a 90's/early 00's iconic TV show is what created the hype. Also, those new espresso martinis they are serving use Intelligentsia coffee (Chicago's answer to Oakland's Blue Bottle coffee) - great quality coffee!

I fly DAY-IAD a few times a year. United flies ERJ145 on that route - no first class. Just 1-2 seating with the whole plane. Buy cheap economy and sit in the back on the side with 1 seat.

Ben wrote ‘ plus the banana pudding for Magnolia Bakery (which seems to have a cult following, but I’m not sure why?).’

Oh my. Yes, I have been thinking the same thing for years. No idea why it is so popular with some people. Overpriced desserts. Service sucks as they actually make rude comments to you. I bought a variety of things and the store employee’s remark that he made on his own as I did not say or do any thing rude was ‘What kind of a friend you are. You are going to give your friends a heart attack’. So, I had to reply in kind by simply and sarcastically saying ‘yes’. He had no idea that it was a party with dozens of people (like around 30-40 people) there so definitely needed to bring enough for everyone.

What is interesting Ben is that there are different iterations of United Next. This plane was an early one.

The newer first seat going in now has USB C, hardish shell, wireless charging, the mini divider between seats, etc.

It’s interesting to see how they are doing the retrofit. If it’s a plane that received an interior overhaul shortly before Next was announced, they are coming back in and retrofitting the screens into the existing seats and space bins. But if it’s a new delivery plane or an older seat, they are ripping it out and putting in the latest tech/design seat.

Will be curious what you think of the newest iteration when you fly it as it is different than what you saw on this trip. Not saying it is day and night better but the incremental improvements are meaningful. Good shot of getting it on the a321.

you could have just left it well enough and congratulated UA for what it is done....

but UA, US anchor for Star, has precisely ZERO aircraft in service now with free high speed WiFi and about half of its fleet with AVOD.

In contrast, all of DL's mainline domestic aircraft have high speed WiFi and seatback AVOD except for the 717s

Ben just covered Air France in Europe and he covers LH esp. quite a bit.

We all get the fanboyism but actual facts clearly argue AGAINST your statement.

Again, UA has done a great job and they aren't done - but neither is DL - and for that matter, AA may decide to wake up and realize how badly they have missed the mark.

I was on UA from DC to DFW the other day and it had to have the oldest interior on a major US airline in service today. It hadn’t been refreshed since CO, and still had little video screens with a credit card swipe on the side. Their boarding system is also weird. I was in “Group 1” and was literally the sixth boarding group called, after pre-boards, active duty, GS, 1K, and families with kids. If they’re going to have a numbering system, just be honest and put Group 6 on my boarding card.

I saw this on the United subreddit. It's United catering's take on Magnolia's famous banana pudding but uses mass-use ingredients such as a type of highly-processed soybean oil which is not used in the original banana pudding you can buy at physical Magnolia locations that use "common household" ingredients.

Pretty sure UA still has more preorder options than AA nowadays. On AA you get 2 basic meal choices (a veg and nonveg) along with a preorder cheese plate, green bowl, short rib, and now beef sliders.

But I like that they have grown up Fourlokos ie. Canned espresso martinis

I've been really impressed with the strides UA and AA have been making in domestic premium cabins. Obviously they still have a looong way to go to match many foreign carrier shorthaul products, but still.

Agreed from personal experience on the chili--sloppy presentation, good flavor.

And agree on the pudding. Texture is so weird, and the note on the side that says it can be frozen/re-frozen up to 3 times makes it seem even more shelf-stable and processed. Miss the old sliced cake.

UA's new cabins are great. The problem right now is consistency. There's this nice cabin, the even nicer A321 cabin (though it's legroom is tight), the decent older cabin (e.g., 757) and then the awful old CO cabins with ancient recliners with zero padding left, directTV that barely functions, and dark colors.

And totally agree on the TVs. It is the option of easily having something to watch, or the map. Or briefly watching a show during the meal before working/ reading, or having a show on in the background while working. Just ups the flight's pleasant factor.

I didn't expand on Ben's appropriate and limited comparison of the big 3; someone else did. I also didn't see a need to make a derogatory statement which is actually factually incorrect.

Funny how so many people want to stir the pot and claim I do the same but really can't stand when I make accurate and factual statements - mostly that let the air out of incessant baseless bragging.

UA is making great progress and is following a product playbook which Delta developed among the big 3. and DL's playbook isn't one where it necessarily developed all of the elements.
and neither DL or UA are through w/ their massive cabin refurbushing/technology upgrades.

Just leave it with the facts and we can all get along just fine here.

But it is a MAX and it does not come with a life insurance policy. This LT1K aero engineer goes out of his way repeatedly to avoid flying a MAX, at least until Boeing gets act together.

Any no review of the tiny, tiny MAX lavatories that the average american "of size" can fit into???

So I see you changed the article title to correct the mislabeling of this cabin as "NEXT" but I'm afraid it's still not accurate in its description of UA's narrowbody interiors. The cabin on the Max8 you flew is UA's New F. It was first introduced on the 320s and the first few years worth of MAX were delivered with this cabin. The NEXT cabin was introduced on the 321n, but the 738 and 739 are being retrofitted to NEXT, and the new MAXs are now being delivered with the NEXT cabin. While the cabins at first blush seem similar, the NEXT seat is a different design and NEXT has additional features, including wireless charging and a privacy divider.

“all of DL's mainline domestic aircraft have high speed WiFi and seatback AVOD except for the 717s“

Aka. Delta STILL doesn’t have high speed WiFi on their mainline planes and purposefully maintains an inconsistent product.

Nice job omitting the wide bodies though 😉
Quite the norm for delta travelers to be on a 14 hour flight with no working WiFi. Not the case on aa or United

Grow up

This is one of the oldest versions of their new interiors so the current gen is actually incrementally (but noticeably) nicer.

I believe even the newest seats still use the bad tray table design though. I think they’ve made minor improvements to it like maybe taking some weight out but those tray tables are horrible. You have to hold your drinks while taking it out because it obstructs the center console and because they’re so big and heavy the wear over time causes them to get misaligned and get VERY difficult to put back. I have to help people all the time because it’s not intuitive and forcing it doesn’t work.

I give United a fair shake as much as anyone, but 'quite good' is not the way to describe United's soft product. So much room for improvement and the food presentation is dreadful.

Funny, the seats you're raving about were introduced almost 10 years ago.

And lousy legroom on the A321, playing the Delta game. Economy plus felt roomier.

Who would have guessed AA would be back to having the roomiest domestic first config on a workhorse domestic aircraft, in this case the A321.

Good under seat on these 737s with the 'not newest F seats.'

the truly newest the 'NEXT' product on newer Maxes has less room.

What a stupid remark, and not the first time you have made it. Of course every commenter here cares about safety. What, exactly, would Ben talk about in his blog if the only criterion for reviewing a flight was safety? Every day, thousands of flights in the U.S. and around the world land safely, across multiple airlines. It is table stakes, not what distinguishes one domestic first class product/experience from another. I simply fail to understand what you feel an asinine comment like this adds to the discussion, other than self-righteous finger-wagging that you care about safety someone more than the rest of us. Give it up.

Those groups are called "pre-board" for a reason.

Sure, you can argue those should just be groups 1-5 or whatever, but I don't think it takes major brainpower to understand it.

The better argument is should 1K be a preboard. As a 1K who will never spend enough to make GS, I'm obviously happy with it, but if you're on say a EWR-ORD type route I'm sure it gets annoying to the Group 1 people when like 40 people board ahead of you.

Pre-boards were just the first group - folks in wheelchairs. Every airline does that. There were 4 more groups after the pre-boards, and that’s a first for me. By the time they get down to boarding “Group 1”, the people who paid for first class, the F cabin and overhead bins are full.

I'd be in favor of retiring the term 'Big 3' for US aviation. With JetBlue, Alaska, and even Southwest offering comparable products, it seems odd that we still halo United, Delta, and American.

I still remember being refused turndown service by a senior FA on transatlantic Polaris last year. Admittedly it was considerably cheaper than the European carriers (booked with purchased points) but I didn't expect them to deny such a simple request.

AKA- you aren't smart enough to do actual math and see that DL has more aircraft with AVOD and high speed FREE WiFi so you harp incessantly on the exceptions.

There is no airline with 900 plus aircraft that has 100% consistency - but the notion that DL is somehow behind UA is only a conclusion of your distorted mind.

and, no, I did not omit the widebodies. See above regarding exceptions.

You, once again, ignore the fact that DL is turning on WiFI on a regular basis on international flights and they will get the capacity for TPAC flights in a few months when more satellites are launched.

IF AA and UA ever have FREE HIGH SPEED WiFI on their widebody fleets before DL, you will have something to crow about - but it is highly unlikely to happen - so you harp on exceptions.

and, no, AA and UA do not have WiFi that is available for the entirety of every one of their international flights - free or not.

the big 3 name has to do with the global networks which American, Delta and United have which differentiate them from even Southwest which is often considered part of the big 4.

i think most customers care about having wifi.
Not giving Delta all their browser history (though I admit. The google model of taking ALL passenger data and not mentioning it seems to be working for Delta. Their passengers just haven't started to realize yet that "free" with delta means they own your browser history).

And yes. AA and UA do have wifi on every international trip. Try again, Tim.

Free wifi is easy when you're taking all your customer data without much informed consent aside from a 1000 page "check the box" agreement.

I agree free wifi is nice but it isn't free. Delta is basically just stealing data from customers in the typical google fashion. AA is taking more of an apple approach assuming their customers don't want their data owned by an airline.

But. Back to basics since you seem misinformed.
Wifi that works Globally? AA: Check
Wifi that is high speed domestically on EVERY mainline flight: AA: Check (Definitely not delta if you fly on the 717s that permeate the Delta skies)
Wifi that might be there domestically and NEVER there globally except European flights: DL: Check. Also, DL is happy to not tell you you'll not have wifi for 14 hours lol. "Surpreese" to borrow a Meryl Streep line.
UA: wifi everywhere. global wifi everywhere (way above delta) but not high speed. But then again. Delta has never cared about high speed wifi for customers on mainline flights either. If they did, the 717s sure did seem to skip their memory.

Tim if delta wants to scream about wifi, then HAVE high speed wifi on every mainline plane FOR A START. Delta does not and hasn't for years now. But just markets lies to make up for it.

At least united has a long term plan for starlink. AA has had high speed wifi on EVERY mainline plane that works globally for YEARS now.
Delta hasn't EVER.

Get your facts straight before you come back drunk on an online comment section

How's Brad DiFiore these days? Is he still always buying you everything out of pity?

New and shiny with a dated look minus some additional modern attributes
If this is a game changer in Domestic First (sigh) let me check out now
The menu looks somewhat appealing however Bens veg chili looks like a cheap sloppy joe minus the beef.I can just imagine the quality of crab they will put into their crab-cakes (roll eyes)
And while some others think its inappropriate to call out the max for safety its always in the back of my mind due to the past issues and lost lives.
If I have a choice and within reason I will happily take another carrier and aircraft based on industry experts that have worked for Boeing who admit they wouldn't fly on it!
Yes the lavatories are torture for the tall and large folks
Evil in fact.God forbid handicapped/disabled just cruel
But at least its clean and new I'll give them that (sigh)
For the outrageous pricing on revenue or award United typically offers on premium cabin they can do better IMO

how is that you can make absolute sense except when you are talking about Delta or to me?

Your ENTIRE post is full of hypocrisy.

You honestly think that AA or UA is not "stealing" data from passengers? you are either hopelessly naive or so hellbent on arguing that you couldn't see the truth if it hit you up the side of the head.

Of course, Delta and United both see the value in the improvements they are adding - but neither is complete and it is only in your distorted mind that you decide to weigh either's progress so that DL looks bad but UA or AA is supposed to look great.

The only one that is drunk AND high is you. Or you are mentally unbalanced. I'm honestly going with all 3.

You prove it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME you respond to anything about DL or to me.

Recently flew this product. It was my first UA flight in a few years, from MCO-DEN. I forgot my AirFly AND my headphones chord was broken, so I was thrilled to see they now have Bluetooth built in to the ICE. First time I had seen that (or at least first time I noticed it). That alone made me a huge fan of their new product. I used to actively avoid both UA and AA, but I have no problem with UA going forward after a great experience.

I agree that the tray tables' return to their nest is a pain! I can work a computer, drive a car, ride a bicycle, cook a meal and a lot more. But I no longer even try to put the tray away....I just rely on the flight attendants to do it, and about 50% of the time, it isn't consistently easy for them either!

My wife and I flew UA business class DFW-EWR-MXP last month. On the DFW-EWR leg, the flight attendant dropped my meal on the floor (I had pre-ordered) while putting it together and then served the same meal scraped from the floor I presume. He did apologize saying it was plated badly and gave me 5000 points, but I would have preferred if he had just said that he was sorry he dropped my meal and he won't be able to serve it. Accidents happen and I wouldn't have thought much about it but I thought it was extremely unhygienic to serve that meal.

The flight from EWR to MXP had the most disgruntled crew I have come across in a long time. My wife, who usually treats all flights as something to endure noticed and commented about it. I also didn't see what the big deal about the Polaris seats are - I like the AA Business class seats better, although I must admit the mattress and duvet were better than AA's. The inflight meals were terrible.

I am pretty agnostic about airlines, but being based in DFW I do a lot of flying on AA. I flew 11 airlines and over 100K miles last year, mostly in Business and based on my limited experience I will rank UA as the worst.

As a dominant AA flyer, I agree that AA offers the weakest FC experience in general. Hard product for sure and soft product it’s hit or miss. I and colleagues (all DFw based) jokingly appreciate our at least consistent disappointment with AA. The product fleet wide is generally more consistent than any other US airline but can’t say I’d brag about that. Similarly AA I think places last in INTL prem cabins too in both hard and soft product and airport experiences, but some fantastic partners.

AA’s WiFi is horrendously expensive and even when traveling for work I’m hesitant to buy full flight pass as I know they aren’t expecting leisure guests to fork over $25+ for full flight pass. honestly, most customers really probably couldn’t care about sharing their data these days when your appliances are also largely collecting your data and your phone and tv are also always listening. Just the way things are now.

I look forward to taking more business to UA soon but will probably status match in Q3 when UnitedNext is a little further along.

Don’t say that. He is very relevant and credible in the community. If fact, every morning I access multiple travel blogs searching for information and analysis which features “as flagged by Tim Dunn”. I’m still haven’t found any, but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t mean he is not relevant at all. In fact, I’m pretty sure that he is way harder to bait and made fun of than my 10 years old nephew.

relevance isn't the issue.

Correct or not is.

It is simply factually incorrect to even compare Star Alliance quality to SkyTeam quality and certainly based on the product attributes that Ben noted here.

UA has made enormous progress in upgrading their hard onboard product but they are still hundreds of airplanes behind DL for the same things.

We get that people like you, eduardo, are simply here to throw dirt (nicely) into the wind but for those that are the least bit interested in being accurate, trying to pretend that incessantly finding exceptions because you don't like that one carrier is considerably ahead of a competitor is the height of being disconnected. and downright argumentative.

appropriate comparisons as Ben made are reasonable. Incessant manipulation of reality is not.

I fully agree. The "stronger argument" could include a better aero-engineering/design, better manfacturing quality, and the list goes on and on. The MAX is a modern version of a Chevy Corvair or a Yugo IMO.

I can’t second the “great tech”. I had the new IFE system on an Airbus flight and the Bluetooth wireless to my Bose earbuds disconnected after just a few seconds. It happened all the time and hence was completely unusable.

There seems to be major compatibility issues given that Bose is a well known brand.

We just flew yesterday from EWR to Montego Bay, a nearly 4 hour experience on a Max 9 with the exact same layout as was described in this article. The cabin crew was top notch but the same luxe seat the writer describes that I sat in had a broken recline button and looked tired with too many years in service. It was a sad experience (though my late arriving checked bag did get delivered to my resort the next day, but that's another issue).

Also, no stroopwaffels!

I think many of the lunch entrees looked pretty good for a domestic flight. I'm perplexed why you would order the one item that looked most repulsive, then say the food was unremarkable, particularly when a unique item like crab cakes was available.

We avoid the "death plane" as much as possible, however we have to this weekend to Calgary with United. Also the first class seats are like a park bench and no one can return the tray table and the crew have to struggle to do it for passengers. Airbus is a far superior aircraft.
