We just arrived to one of favorite hotels and find the connecting door open. We always check them.
Closets - the room we had last week, has three small closets, most are just hanging racks, one for the iron board. One closet is small with just a shelf, not much use, we didn't look inside.
A few days there was a smell in the hallway, housekeeping sprayed. A day later the oddest thing, when we approached our door the smell was more intense. We told management. They didn't react much. We cleaned our door inside and out, it is wooden, it is absorbing a smell.
My wife thought it was a dead animal somewhere. So on the third day, (the hotel probably thought we were weird saying our door smells).
I began to check everything, I started looking into the vents, then I opened the unused small cabinet by the door, and found a bottle on the shelf and the smell was so bad.
The previous guest left a bottle with a quarter of milk, the screw top loose. The milk was rotten. It was embedding into the wood.
That is why our door particularly smelled.
Housekeeping came, yes it was their mistake not to check all closets, but also the previous guest, who turned out to be Globalists, it certainly looked intentional, pissed at the hotel. They don't know who the next guest is.
Strange and very poor behaviour from anyone to do let alone a Globalist.
The hotel compensated us, because in the last, it is still the housekeeping who skipped checking the room.
This time coming back to the same hotel, they left the connecting door unlocked.
It is a good hotel but it is certainly seeming strange.
Agree with all pointss except the last one about tipping housekeeping. Never done it and not about to start now. If the US can’t figure out how to pay hardworking people a decent living wage, that’s not the rest of the world’s problem.

Do many of these things - plus a quick remote wipe and, when I leave, try to leave things in pretty good order. No tipping.
I heartily endorse your door closing and hallway conversation practices. Would that more fellow travelers had the same courtesy when arriving at their rooms at 3 AM or exiting them at 4 AM.
Remember management can usually open a deadbolt. They even have a gizmo to open the privacy latch ( I discovered this when I had a two bedroom suite with two entrance doors where I had exited out of one door and left the privacy latch on the other and the battery died in the door without the privacy latch so it couldn't read the key). It is a pretty violent process, however, and would definitely make a ruckus. You might want to pack a door stopper -- particularly if you return to Egypt!
