No fan of Trump, but, let’s be clear: Putin is the actual Hitler of our time, specifically because of his annexation of Crimea, invasion of Ukraine, attempts to re-establish a Russian Empire, war-mongering in Africa and ME, leading to migration crises in Europe, and ongoing psyops threatening the EU and US, arguably leading to Brexit and Trumpism. I almost pity the average Russian who is under his boot, but, they could ‘end’ this, if they really wanted to. We’re trying, too.

Given how many people accept fallen and falling standards, I suspect that if this were to occur in the USA or the UK, some people would rationalize why the flight was still OK.

This for sure is because of sanctions for the reasons you list: a huge portion of the fleet is inoperable, forcing carriers to do stuff like this if they want to keep operating (and even in Mother Russia, businesses will continue making money until they cannot).
The problem is acting like sanctions are the problem. The sanctions are there as a result of their government's actions. Effective or not, we can debate, but they certainly didn't just appear for no reason.
So Mason, do you seriously expect me to comment upon the safety record of 30-50 year old aircraft, in comparison to an almost new one?

Well, flying like this does happen in Siberia. In regions that remote, there is shortage of modern infrastructure, and many smaller places have just a gravel airfield in summer, and in winter the same airfield is being made of packed snow. Rugged Soviet planes like An-24/26 actually are built to handle such conditions.
As for the age - well, today 30-40 seat turboprops aren't being made. Some Beechcraft 1900D flown around British Columbia, Canada to rural communities are of the same age, and Harbor Air in Vancouver flies Otters which were built shortly after WW2.

Well, obviously not all Russia flies like this, and even this by good means is an isolated incident. Especially given that this is a remote flight to a small and distant place. Same incidents can happen to isolated communities in Alaska or Northern Canada as well, and there are plenty of those reachable only by air.
To destinations like those rural ones in Siberia - old An-24/26 is safer, obviously. Those communities don't even always have a paved strip - just a gravel airfield or unpaved airstrip, and in winter they just pack snow on top of it. You don't fly a 737 or an E175 to such places. You may be able to land one there, but getting out will be the whole new story.

When in Russia, stick to Aeroflot (or its subsidiaries) or S7 if possible! I flew IrAero once (Sukhoi Superjet), and it was worse than Spirit or Ryanair. Never again.
Spoken like an ignorant person who has never visited Russia. Moscow is one of the nicest, cleanest cities that I have ever visited. I was there last week, in fact.
