Canada’s second largest airline, WestJet, has just announced a massive aircraft order. With this, the airline claims to have the largest order book of any Canadian airline. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the airline evolves over the next several years.

With the 789s, there are plenty of opportunities for them in the Pacific.

The constant shade (EVERY post) regarding the Max 7-10/777X certification is really tiresome. Yah we know you think it’s cute to remind us of the OBVIOUS. Do you seriously think those aircraft won’t get certified? Give it a rest.

I think the premium cabin size will be interesting.

WestJet only has 4 rows of business class on its 787s currently.

I think they could easily add a few more imo, the issue will be how they retrofit or adjust their route capacity.

They might launch services to Australia/NZ with their extra 787.

As for all the MAX aircraft in winter, I would guess as many flights south to warm climates like Mexico and the Carribbean as possible?

Excellent. All the best to Westjet and Porter. Any market share taken away from AC is a good thing

Astounding foresight on the part of WS’ management team to place an order in June, then.

Westjet's current 787 fleet operates a ton of routes out of multiple airports, way more than you would expect from a fleet of 7 aircraft. I'd expect the airline to expand the frequencies of many of these routes with their additional orders, along with a few new routes.

Does any western country have a worse "aggregate" airline customer satisfaction index than Canada?

I mean the Trio of AC-Rouge, Westjet and Porter is just pretty sad. Although I guess a native clientele that's used to "cuisine" of poutine and healthcare-for-free as long you drive two provinces away...
So "cheap flights on Westjet" is just a natural.

Good Luck!

WS's homebase of YYC won't be able to handle the traffic. It's bad enough as is.

you do realize that AC's labor problems w/ the FAs didn't become public the day before they went on strike?

AC’s labor troubles were well known, but saying “they have extra cash ergo placed an aircraft order before they had the extra cash” is illogical.

Canadian and Wardair were much better than AC. Canadian had great routes to Japan from YVR.

I will just say IMHO that WestJet has one of the most tasteful paint schemes of any airline.

as usual, you jumped to conclusions based on an incorrect reading of what I wrote.
Nowhere did I say that WestJet placed an order BECAUSE OF AC's strike.

Try harder to focus on what is said and not what you want to believe was said just so you can argue.

I think eventually once the Max 7&10 are certified Westjet will convert some of this huge MAX10 order to include some Max7s. There simply isnt enough demand for them to be replacing -7 routes with a much larger-10 unless they plan on scaling back some frequencies as a result but with the amount of planes that just doesnt seem plausible. they fly between Calgary and Vancouver 16x daily and Calgary and Toronto upwards of 11x daily. THis huge Max10 order seems like overcapacity is heading there way especially since they plan on configuring them with 212 seats

I dont anticipate much of the routes going to more than daily at best from Calgary they already fly daily to Tokyo Paris and London year round, I can see them increasing Rome to daily for the peak summer season and increasing service to Barcelona to 5-6x weekly, I know they want slots to Lisbon so I can see them launching Calgary or even Halifax to Lisbon if they get the slots or pehaps they'll launch double daily to Japan eventually. Its disappointing that Westjet is circling the block on this dreamliner order when they had 3 painted and configured and options for 10 more that they could have easily activated years ago and been flying them as we speak. Even in the winter they could easily fill these planes to Cancun, Punta Cana and Montego Bay

I think they will target the US West Coast with flights to Hawaii as well as Central & South America.
